I wish! See the thread on the G-11 here:

(The link is inoperative)

There is some discussion of this. Basically, in Single Player missions, the gliders work not too bad. Turning Autopilot on and off can restore your full controls under tow, and you can easily release by turning away from the towplane.

In multiplayer coop, however, there are a few bugs, to say the least. Perhaps we can persuade some kind modder to revisit the gliders? The answer may lie with the Attach/Detach Aircraft function, but I suspect it will be much more complicated than that to fix.

Well, I got to thinking about this, and have kind of concluded, in my ignorance of modding, that the solution to the current glider problems will probably lie in tinkering with the FM, or something related. If so, this would mean adding a new aircraft slot for a modded glider, which can be done now.

So I downloaded all of QTim's tools, and started looking at them to try to get a handle on what they are and what they do. Certainly lots for me to learn and discover there!

Anyhow, one thing I did notice, is that there is a separate engine model for the towline! Confusedhock: It is called TowString.emd

Cool! Now all I have to do is figure out how to control this "engine".

Now that might be useful to the modders working on catapult launch Idea

Yes, and it has the Thrust parameters (like a jet engine) of 1500kg for the G-11 and 3000kg for the Me-321, but how to turn it on or off?

Knowing it is some kind of engine, the first thing I tried was to see if "I" would release the glider. It doesn't...there is just an "Engine Off" HUD message, and it can't be restarted, but glider proceeds to tow normally even with "Engine Off".

Looking through G-11.class, I saw mention of TypeGlider, TypeTransport, and TypeBomber. So I tried all the various bomber controls to see if anything worked. Well, guess what...the G-11 has Level Stabilizer!

Yes, I would like to see better implementation of the gliders in game (well, that comes naturally to me being a glider pilot myself, check my sig)

Same here, Brophmeister! (Is that a gold badge I see?) Well, many years ago, not now, but being able to finally fly the gliders really gave me a thrill! I'm quite pleased with the G-11 in Single Player, but since dipping my toes into multiplay with my brother a couple years ago, offline single play just doesn't hold the appeal. That said, however, Danzigzag's included missions are pretty darn cool!

I'm going to continue to experiment with my brother on multiplayer coop and the gliders, but don't know how much time or skill I would have for getting into the modding. There seem to be so many separate files that interact in this sim, it could take quite a while to isolate things.

Not to mention that I'm already venturing into FM in an effort to understand this glider, and I don't know how much help I will get on that. But I have no idea at the moment if the solution lies in the engine model, or something else.

Nope, close but not quite. Its a bad scan of a Silver C badge.
If youre into glider sims, have you ever given Condor a try?

Thanks, Brophmeister! Now, my brother and I are looking into Condor and a couple others:

Sailors of the Sky
Silent Wings

Do you have any experience with either of those?

BTW: I'm making no headway whatsoever with getting gliders to release in coops. I think I need a java tutorial.

I havn't tried Sailors of the Sky, but I have tried Silent Wings. I personally find it to be a bit like FS2004, only with support for thermals and slope soaring. Not too bad, but could have been done better. I think that both of these games come with a free demo download, so you can try it yourself. Unfortunately Condor dosn't come with a demo, but it blows all other soaring simulators out of the water!
Do a search on youtube for Condor Soaring and check out some of the videos people have made. Also, theres some vids on the condor website of some impressive stuff (cross country over the alps, aerobatics in a kitfox etc)

[EDIT] I just had another look at the Condor website, and found this:

With graphics like that, why would you want anything else?
Next challenge: port that scenery over to IL2

Thanks for the input! We have downloaded the two demos, and will try them out sometime soon. We are, of course, interested in the online multiplay support.

To keep this a little more on topic...here's what I've accomplished towards getting IL-2 gliders to work in multiplay:

1. I can change the length of the towline!

Whoop-di-doo, eh! sigh

I also changed the tow string Kx and string factor, but not really sure exactly what they are. Changing one of those made the AI glider towlines snap immediately, however, mine still clung to me with a vengeance. In fact, it's possible to kind of use the tug and towline as a winch, dive down, then pull up. You can zoom up thousands of meters that way, but the line just won't break.

There seems to be something that applies to the the AI, but not to a player. Whatever it is, there is some other file(s) somewhere that must hold the key, but I'm pretty much at the end of my tether...pun intended. And of course, there is still no rudder or aileron control on tow, but I can't even confirm if you get those controls back after release.

As far is online multiplay support is concerned, I'd say Condor is the best. You can connect to any game via the condorsoaring website in much the same manner as Hyperlobby.

Nice work on the tow line mods!
