I'd buy a mod installer
#1

I've got several mods but to be honest the hassle of making sure that a lot of the mods work together, and the maps work and so on, puts me off installing a lot of them. What would be great is for an installation programs to be provided for:

1. The major mods eg the sound mod plus the pack for the AI aircraft already in game
2. Other aircraft (final versions only)
3. Bits and pieces (cockpits, sound effects, clouds etc)
4. Finished maps
5. Anything else

What would be even better is if the installation program allowed you to choose which of the mods would be installed (eg Choose exhaust flames but not dive noises). As I said I'd pay for this for a small sum per installation program, but I'd expect the installer to make everything run ok without problems and hassle. Maybe 5 euros per installer would be a good sum.

I'll leave this idea to float around...

I think I remember a post from a while back that said the guy who made Lock On Manager (LOMAN) is making a version for IL2.

trouble with this is the ever updating mods and new ones.... and also this would mean a huge size file which is annoying for download....

Hi,

i made the custom installer for TOW, it does all automaticaly even adding into the originsl filesid.ini file of the game, like adding new tanks, new guns, sounds, etc and also automaticaly adding into the encyclopedia, you could even remove them in user interface, you just select from desired mods and press move to install them into the game. But this was done for TOW, i dont know the file structure of the IL2, and there was no interest in the community, they were using JSGME which was hard to use.

In my squad, a member makes 'modpacks' for us,which have all the major mods we want, and update packs as and when new mods arrive. We just right click > extract to > and thats it.I am sure other squads are doing this as well. That way everyone in the squad has the same mods installed, and no compatability issues.
But everyone likes different mods,so this approach would probably not work for everyone.

IL2 community haven yet reached the stage where you would be adding new aircraft or new tanks, etc, atleast in tow, you needed to edit 5 major files and add some new entries to them, so this was a hard task, if you overwriten those, you lost previous mods.

What rock have you been hiding under the past few months? (joking)

There is a lot of work in progress, now I don't see even the tip of the iceberg, but I know there's more than meets the eye... there always is... a handy manager would be nice though

Edit: understand your point now jones, all it took was magpie to make me see what you meant Wink

Yeah, there is a major work in progress but there is still needed some time to get to the final importer/exporter of new stuff especially the all new 3d units, this is because the planes are split in XXXXX number of parts which are all placed around 0 global space, so if you would load all msh's of one plane, you would get a very weird result, i'm saying that there is need for other tools than just the msh exporter/importer.
