RAM Upgrade question
#1

I'm running an old computer: Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB PC2700, 7600GS, XP SP1. I've noticed that in large missions on some of the new maps that incorporate high quality textures and are quite large (the Slot is the primary issue, but I've seen similar things on others), I'm getting pauses (and the occasional lock-up/crash) when changing views or when new graphics/objects/effects have to load.

I know I desperately need to upgrade the whole machine, but for the moment I'm looking to avoid that. Other than the problem noted, I've got IL2 running well enough for my liking. My question is this: Would upgrading to 2GB RAM show notable improvement on the specific issue mentioned above?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Perhaps. It might. It depends on what is causing the issue above, it could also be hard drive hitching (try defragging) or video hitching due to low video memory (I'm assuming you only have 128mb?), or a few other things like background processes or IL2 conf.ini inefficiencies.

However, memory is your most likely culprit, yes.

Video memory is actually 256MB. I just defragged now, so I'll see if that does anything. I've got the conf.ini pretty well tweaked at this point, so I don't think it's a factor. Background processes are at a minimum (I've shut off a bunch of stuff that's non-critical). Thanks for your input.
