Critique, who needs it?
#1

Hi gents,

Just a question for anyone posting shots of their work, do you post shots to have them constructively criticised in order to learn from points & suggestions made by others in order to become better at it, or do you post, to share a pic you particularly like for whatever reason?

The reason I ask this is perhaps personal to me, I dont do bullshit or pretence, by this I mean I wont tell someone something is good if I dont think it is, or, it has errors which can be easily corrected if pointed in the right direction? I wont lie to someone to save their feelings under any circumstances.

My view is this, if someone posts a pic theyve worked on and its not quite right, I think its better to tell them, than to bullshit them, IMHO I wouldnt be doing them any favors bullshitting them, if I do, their work doesnt really improve, however If I'm honest and helpfully point out mistakes & make suggestions their chances at improving would perhaps be better?

What brings me to ask this, is this, there are obviously posters here that are good and well versed in screenie art & there are others not so, do the guys who are not so good want to learn & become better and do the guys who are experienced want to help them?

Or am I getting it all upside down & everyone posts work good or bad for no particular reason?

I realise critique can be a very touchy subject for some & in the past I've had issue with it myself as no doubt Fat Boy can confirm, but, that aside, I would like you all to know, I'm an honest person & will go out of my way to help anyone who wants it. Any critique I have offered or would offer was & is my just trying to help people improve their technique or advance their Knowledge.

Or is it best, if we dont like something not to post in the thread at all & perhaps risk alienating the threads creator particularly if you feel they may expect a post?

Finally, I dont want to upset anyone with critique if they dont want it & its certainly not my intention to do so, hence this post, I thought it better to ask about the subject than to assume.

I know that every picture I post on here could've been better...but I'm usually tired, posting late after work all day and go ahead and submit what I believe to be unfinished edits.

In fact, I've never submited a single screenshot that I would consider to be truly complete

For me, I just try to post cool shots - and hope that those people who enjoy them post a message and say so. I'd prefer not to be critiqued myself, unless I was trying to learn a specific technique from someone and ask that they coach me along.

Just my $0.02.

Hi, Darren :!: Big Grin

For my part, I'll pass on the critique and on the improvement. I have no desire to improve and I'm pretty much able to make what I want to make the way I want to make it. Some may like what I make and some may not like what I make but, either way, that's what I make.

99% of the time I don't offer suggestions. If a poster makes it clear that he WANTS help, then I'll help as best I can. I tend to take my cues from the poster. Idea

Good questions, Darren! Thanks for asking :!: 8)

Cheers,
Fats

I like to receive critiques. I need them to improve. I don't get bad feelings if anyone says me my screens are poor in quality or if there is a easy way to improve them.

I enjoy editing screenies, and I would like to read yor constructive words mate. I have been here for several months learning from all of you and it would be easier to improve understanding my faults on each work.

Thanks Shooter.

I think that's a very reasonable suggestion, Leigh. Those who want critique can simply post "C&C" along with their image. Good thinking, M8 Big Grin

OK, Willy! If that's what you want then that's what you'll get, lol :!:

"Critique" and "being critical" are two different things. I don't want to be "critical" of somone else's work. If someone makes it known that they want comments on how they might improve an image, I'll offer suggestions for their consideration. The emphasis is on things which can be experimented with rather on finding fault with what's already there. It's the difference between saying that an image is too high in contrast versus saying that the author might try lowering the contrast to see if that look appeals to him. Why am I mentioning this?

First of all because I know from experience that "critique" can very quickly deteriorate into fault finding. Identifying faults is not the point! Offering suggestions for things which the author can actually implement is the point!

Secondly, the last thing I would ever want to do would be to nip the author's creativity and style in the bud! We each have different ways of approaching things and different tastes, thank God! Otherwise we would all be making the same kinds of images all the time! I want to be careful not to stomp on someone's natural inclinations. The point for me would be to try to help them to go their own way rather then telling them the way to go.

If a shot is posted and the author wants critique he/she should say so, but then be prepared to receive comments that they may not like, otherwise could we say 'suggestions' could be added to help an artist?

As for me, don't really care either way, I post a shot if I am happy with it, but am always open to advice and guidence (as its called at work)

Hey chaps, cheers for the responses/input, I'm in agreement with suggestions made & to clarify it, can we say those requiring constructive criticism in order that they can improve their technique, add something like 'Critique Welcome' to their post. Obviously any posts not asking for critique will be excluded?

Thanks again for your quick responses, as I've said, last thing I want to do is upset folk, particularly if they are happy with their work, on the other hand, I would like to offer help to anyone if required and their goal is to improve, end of day, I dont feel I know everything & I feel I still have much to learn, Im always open to suggestion? What I'm not open to is fault finding for the sake of it as I'm sure you guys arent,' fault finding critique' is the realm of those less capable than any creator of art & I can assure all you gentlemen that I would do my uptmost to ensure 'Fault Finding' , Picky, One upmanship 'I know more than you do bollox' by those incapable of producing what you & I do will be treat with the distain it begsSmile

Best regards

To be honest I post a pic because it has some sort of visual interest, not because I want lots of praise. If I painted a pic from scratch that would be different, but in these pics its the game engine doing that so I hardly take credit. Sometimes a pic is worth sharing (at least in our opinion anyway).
