F19 - Swedish Vounteers in the Winter War BETA
#1

When the Svir Front map of Kapteeni will be released then, as mentioned, there will be three campaigns ready to accompany it. The two first is a Finnish and a Soviet campaign, both set in the summer of 1942.

When I first saw the Svir map I thought it was also a very good map to use for the fighting that took place in northern Finland during the Winter War. So I have built a campaign set in the Winter War. It is now in the BETA stage, ready to be play-tested.

A bit of historical background. Sweden, due to her long historical ties with Finland, had declared itself to be a non-belligerent rather than a neutral country when the Soviet Union invaded in november 1939, and contributed military supplies, cash, credits, humanitarian aid and some 8,700 volunteers. The Swedish Army, which had been downsizing its armed forces since the 1920s, gave away AT guns, large quantities of ammo, rifles etc to Finland.

Perhaps most significant was the Swedish Voluntary Air unit, the "F19", in action from January 7, with 12 Gloster Gladiator II fighters, five Hawker Hart bombers, and eight other planes, amounting to one third of all the Swedish Air Force's fighters at that time. Volunteer pilots and mechanics were drawn from the ranks.

The campaign portrays that action, at the Salla front, during the final phase of the Winter War. In it you will fly BOTH the J8A Gladiator II and the Hawker Hart light bomber, i.e. the U-2VS, which was quite similar, and which is now flyable.

I believe this is the first campaign where you get to fly the U-2VS!

Here are some screenies:

As before: if there is anyone out there willing to test this campaign (where you get to fly two different biplanes!) just send me your email adress in a PM, and I will bung it over!

Thanks for looking!

Campain looks great. I believe the Gladiators with the snow skids are also featured in one of the single missions included with the original game(as non-flyable), but I've never seen them elsewhere until now. I've wondered about that before. Anyone know if they are hiding somewhere in the FMB or QMB that I haven't found?

This campaign is finished now, and can be downloaded here:

Included now is that pilot skin with the leather mask (they used them, as they were flying in temperatures as low as -30 centigrade, in open cockpits!)

I believe that this is the first campaign for the U-2VS! As you can see in the screenies above you also get to fly the Gladiator. And the main enemy aircraft that you meet is the I-153. So this is biplanes galore!

The fires with smoke seemed very realistic, I will use them in my campaigns too. Big Grin

I cannot take off with the J8A on skies! The runway feels like it

The skis on the Gladiator appear automatically on certain Winter maps: you can't control that detail yourself AFAIK.

The taking off - hmm. The swedes DID use ice-covered lakes as airfields amd they could be a biyt bumpy, but that seems to be taking it a bit far. Anyone else have had the same experience?

There seems to be a curious bug on this new Finland territory map, just like in the Thailand/East Burma/Indochina map, that is when you play a few missions or two your progress is never saved. If you quit mid-campaign, you have start all over again.

........only I forgot to mention it + it made other campaigns unsaveable for me!

I think it is somehow map-related.

The problem is not general but pops up for some people, so I guess it must be some glitch in the installation of the map. I can mention that the same thing actually happened to me, with another campaign using the same map. Then I tried it on another machine, and then it worked.

One suggestion would be to remove the map completely, and reinstall it. But I'm not sure that this will fix it.

Strange, strange.
