Wind Mod - How to Validate it's working?
#1

I have the wind mod and followed the instructions, but I'm not seeing any effects (4.08 mod).

I cranked up the settings as well to make sure:

ie. this is added to the end of the .mis file I'm using:

[Weather]
WindVelocity 70
WindDirection 45
WindTop 10000
WindTurbulence 6
WindGust 6

Couple of things:
1. does the cloudtype in [Main] have any influence over these weather settings. ie. must they be in accordance with each other. ie. if I set CloudType to 3 does this then enable wind

From readme:
Quote:WindGust: This must be a number between 0 and 6. It's not an actual measure of the speed of the gusts, rather it equates to the seven types of weather you can set in the FMB (Clear-0 through Thunder-6). For example if you set it to 5, you get the same type of wind gusts you would get in the mod-less game if the Weather was set to 'Rain/Snow'. Without the mod the best four weather conditions (Clear, Good, Hazy, and Poor) have no wind gusts, likewise with this mod, WindGust values of 0, 1, 2 and 3 have no effect. To experience some gusts you must set the value to 4, 5, or 6. (Although, having said all that, I haven't been able to tell that this setting has much effect one way or the other.)

that last line, I'm not sure then. But on the Turbulence:

Quote:...To experience some turbulence you must set the value to 3, 4, 5, or 6

I set this to 6, and started the game at 1000 meters airstart. I would expect with 70 knot winds, 6 turbulence, etc... that it would be rocking me all around right?

Any help, experience, test files, etc... would be appreciated!

(Basically, there isn't much way to know it's working -I was going to suggest to the maker - is there a way to perhaps even write a line to the log that wind is on, etc... ? But since I'm having smooth flying, I'm assuming it's not working for me)

Thanks!

Hi Recon,

To answer your first question, the wind is independent of the cloud type, so it doesn't matter what your cloud type is set to, the wind should work.

One thing to check is that the [Weather] settings you put in your .mis file are still there. If you manually add those settings, then go into FMB and make some changes to the mission, when you save the mission changes the [Weather] settings disappear. You have to manually add them in again.

Do you have any other weather-related mods installed?

One way to test the wind is to put yourself on a carrier, with a strong headwind. Power up and release chocks. If the wind is really strong, you'll pretty much lift straight.

Thanks!

Ok, update: I set to 70, spawned in and it pushed my plane across the ground... so I know it's working.

however, if I do an airstart at 1000, I don't notice it - ie. plane isn't shaking, etc... turbulence is at 6

Is it just for taking off ?

Or is it working, just differently than I think it should? Smile

The wind should definitely affect you at 1000 meters, but the turbulence won't kick in til you get down to about 300 meters. That's because with a turbulence level of 6 you get the same turbulence you would get in the unmodded game if the cloud type was to 6. And in the unmodded game, with the cloudtype set to 6, it seems the turbulence disappears after you get above about 300 meters.

Eventually I plan to work on a new version of the wind mod, and one of the things I'd like to improve is the way turbelence and wind gusts work.

Let me know if you get different results.

Gotcha thanks!

Yes, turbulence all the way up would be incredible.

I can recall my last commercial flight, hitting turbulence, etc... thinking 'man, I wish IL2 had this, it's just way too smooth up here' Smile

The wind does work, pushes me way off course - I was thinking it would be turbulent.

Thanks again for the followup and I look forward to any updates!
