Map Mods Help.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me about how you get these IL2 MAP MODS to load in IL-2 1946.

I am starting to think that I have been wasting my time and these maps only work online and not in offline mode. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Of course the new maps work off-line. In fact, for on-line play most of the new maps are far too large and have way too many objects. They are intended for off-line play.

As for installing new maps. They all come with install instructions, some brief, others in more detail.

You should really read the instructions and follow them carefully.

In summary it is essentially the same procedure:

1/
Unzip the map folder to the following location:

[root of your install of Il-2]/MODS/Mapmods/maps/...

2/
add a line of text to your file called 'all.ini' (which is the same location)
What that line of text is, depends upon the map and is always included with the map install instructions.

Typically it goes like this for a hypothetical map called 'Europe' :

Europe Europe/load.ini

3/
Sometimes, but not always, the modder has included new textures for his map. Put these textures in the location the install specifies.

Once again a typical location will be:

[root of your install of Il-2]/MODS/Mapmods/maps/_Tex/land/summer/ ....

That's all. Usually just 2 steps to follow, sometimes 3.

I have read the instructions. I installed IL-2 1946, then applied the 4.08 patch. I then installed JSGME and it made a MODS folder. I then put unpacked GW_winter_mapspack_v1_0.exe to my C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS\maps folder, and the 3DO folder to: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS. I then put the all.ini supplied with the download into my C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS\maps folder and then started JSGME and activated the MAPMODS. I then start IL-2, but cannot for the life of me find where I can choose the winter maps. I then tried the same with LAL_Normandie_44, but I cannot seem to find where I can choose the Normandy map. All I can ever choose are: Okinawa, Coral Sea, Pacific Islands, Smolensk, Moscow1 and Crimea !

So I must be doing something wrong. When I installed LAL_Normandie-44 I added this line to the all.ini file: LAL_Normandie-44 LALnormandy2/LAL_load2.ini, but still I cannot find an option to choose the map.

Thanks.

You are probably not distinguishing between the Quick Mission Builder (QMB) and the Full Mission Builder (FMB).

The QMB is indeed not set up to accept new maps unless you install another mod - QMB+ - I think is the name.

But the QMB is mainly intended as a quick method of playing a game and doesn't really allow for much in the way of complexity or inspiration in the way of flying missions.

The FMB is the real thing when it comes to mission building. New maps are mainly intended for use in the FMB.

Learning to use the FMB can be a bit daunting at first, - it's not just click, click click and start flying, but it is well worth a small effort to learn how to use.

Thanks you lot. So now I have these maps installed, the only time I can use them is if I have some missions designed specifically for those maps, or I build my own for those maps? So this is where the confusion has come from.

So I have GW_winter_mapspack_v1_0, so now I have to find a mission for it, or design my own. I think I shall also look at this Quick Mission Builder mod as well.

Thanks.

That should be it. But just to make sure, try opening up your FMB, choose 'load map' from the first pull down menu.

You should then see a list of maps to choose from. And if the maps you installed show up on the list, then obviously you have installed them.

Just to make sure they are properly installed, just choose one. You needn't make a mission for it, but if it loads correctly, then you will know you've done the installation correctly.

That should at least be a beginning and a comfort knowing you can install new maps ...

You can find lots of missions pre-made at Flying Legends and Mission4Today. Can't guarantee it will be missions for a spcific map though. That takes some looking around.

Right, I have looked at the full mission builder, and they are all there! So, I had installed them correctly, but I read no-where that they only worked in the FMB, and that is where the confusion derived from.

I shall now try and find some maps with appropriate missions. Or try and find some missions for the maps I have already installed.

As a sidenote, If I did find some missions for my map mods, where exactly would they show up in
IL-2 and what menu would I be able to select them?

Thanks.

Once you install new missions, they too will only show up the FMB - use the 'File' pull-down menu and then choose 'load'.

When you download missions from a site, you need to put them in the 'Missions' folder of your game root.
