Egypt - El Alamein?
#1

Actually my first thread believe it or not! (too busy downloading goodies).

I've being knocking together an historic mission pack using the book "Fighters over the desert" by Christopher Shores. Obviously I've been using the fantastic AAA maps, namely the cracking "AFRICA-ITALY_GREECE map. Can't say how pleased I am with that - really awesome. Does anybody use the stock maps anymore?

Then I realised that despite downloading every historical WW11 map here, there doesn't seem to be one that covers Egypt?

I have'nt been through every page mind - but seems a major oversight, considering the battle of El Alamein and all that, only Rommels biggest defeat in N. Africa......

My MTO map (which is currently WIP but on hold) covers Egypt, and will have every airfield/airstrip, based on actual aerial photos.

Viking has an Alamein map due out shortly.

I've been working on an Egypt map as well. Did a smaller version and then noticed that El Alamein was just on the fringes. So I redid into a larger version.

One of the trickier parts is getting the landscapes more or less acceptable in regards to both desert and Nile Delta cultivation, which is very green and full of fields ... and it's hard deciding how much of the delta to depict as delta with all the meandering waterways and stuff ... maybe it's not even relevant for an Egypt map as battle area ... but still ...

Only to download ready-made airfields ... ha ha.

A year ago, when i first bought IL-2, I thought they were the summum of map-making for a flight sim ... who would ever have thought this game had the potential for maps such as are coming out here on the forum? Amazing really ...

Well...I don't know about shortly, b/c I really want to get Crete finished - but I am planning on completing the following - it should go pretty quickly once I get some info on airfield locations.

This is why I think it it is better to have large scale maps of smaller geographic areas - You only have so many textures to work with and the more of the Earth you try to depict with this limited palette the less successful you can be. -viking

Have to agree with Viking on this one. As soon as you get into the Delta, you get a whole new terrain which must be tiled.

As well, you have to build and make objects for Alexandria, if not also Cairo. And they are both very large. And none of this area was involved in the fighting in 1942.

viking's idea for a simple terrain and a limited area makes great sense. There is already a Tobruk map. Possibly a Mareth Line map could complete the set.

EL alamein would be nice to fly those planes in the sky in the beginning of CoD 2 battle of el alamein where you have to eliminate those german cannon crews on the shore.

Outstanding stuff guys. Guess Egypt maps are like buses; first you don't get any, then loads come along together!

Really like to say thanks to all the modders/map builders on this site, your work is really outstanding. Il-2 is a differant game thanks to this community. Big Grin

I'll try and do my bit by building mission packs for em. I'll post when I've finished the one I'm working on for Africa/Italy/Greece map.
