In late September 1943, Adolph Hitler payed a visit to Army Group South's HQ near Zaporozhye on the Dniepr river. He was flown in in his personal FW-200C/U1 Condor Named Immelmann III D-2600 to a grass strip about a mile from the building where the meeting between Hitler and Generalfeldmarschall Erich Von Manstein was held. The Soviets got word of this meeting and apparently they sent a crack unit of T-34's to try to get the Fuhrer before he left.
Manstein's staff found out about this sally and the meeting was stopped and the HQ prepared to bug out. Hitler hurried to the airstrip in a Kubelwagen (Bringing the whole Fuherer Beglitregiment was too much of a security risk, so no big 6 wheeled Mercedes G-50) where his ace pilot Hans Bauer had just gotten all 4 engines on the big Condor ticking over when Hitler arrived, jumped in, and yelled at Bauer to get going! The second the plane hit the end of the runway the Russian tanks arrived and started shooting up the place. The leading tank commander had NOT been informed what the mission was all about and Hitler skimmed over them by mere feet and got away.
The mission is to make an AIRBORNE component of this attempt to assasinate Hitler, just like the USAAF succeeded in killing Isoroku Yamamoto on his way to Kihili on Bougainville in the Pacific. There must have been a LOT of Ivans crying in their vodkas over THAT missed opportunity.
This is a two sided mission. If you're the Russkis Get Hitler at all costs. The German side is that you play Hans Bauer and get your beloved Fuhrer back to Berlin in one piece.
lordish
