Would it be possible for someone to create a "sonic boom" effect for PeterD's new F-86? Which I recently noticed had supersonic capability. And if so, will it be difficult?
Thanks in advance,
XB-49
im no programmer but i think it'll take a lot of tweaking around in the game files, since a ME 262 H-II is also supersonic in a slight dive, and btw, you'd need 2 tweak the blackouts 2 because you go black waaaay 2 fast otm with supersonic speed

This has been asked many times and no-one has done it. Many modders said that is impossible or really hard to make.
And for anyone whose played Lock On, you'd know that if you put the camera in front of the aircraft, you wouldn't be able to hear the aircraft at all.
I had my F-86 up to 750 MPH with a 500FPM descent and she was quite stable. Then I hit flyby view and she came sippin by and the doppler effect as she passed sort of sounded like a low sonic boom. I hit the flyby button about a dozen times just to listen to it. SWEEEEETTTT!!!!!
I don't think the boom would be heard in the pit, as you are moving faster than the sound is, but for movie makers i could see that mod being very useful.
All you'd need to do is create a PRS file that points to the speed of the plane. I think this is done in the EFF file for the planes. It could be as simple as making it part of the common aircraft sounds, so you wouldn't need to back track through the game and find every supersonic plane.
Unfortunately, my knowledge beyond the prs file is very limited but a more experienced modder should have no problem at least creating the PRS for the sound.
As for visual effects, that is probably more complicated but i've also seen other new effects added to the game. Like the mushroom clouds for bigger bombs.
I think its probably possible, but maybe a lot of work to take on for such a small effect.

As far as I know, people inside an aircraft do not hear anything as they pass supersonic speed.
