I am trying to make a map of part of the Hawaiian Island chain. My motivation for this is simple: IL-2 only has a map of Oahu, with Kauai thrown in.
Historically, this means that after December 7, you are done with the map except for sightseeing What I had in mind was something a little different: inclusion of other islands in the chain except the big island of Hawaii. This is why I am calling this project 'Oahu Plus,' as it does have Oahu- but also Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe (the target island). This way you have a historical weapons range to practice in.
Anyone who is a veteran of F/A-18 Korea remembers the training range, which was ironically historically inaccurate since Target Island was closed as a bombing range in 1990. But being that the US Government commandeered the island after Pearl Harbor for training purposes, that makes the timeframe ideal for IL-2!
The textures for the above Target Island will be tricky as they are different from all the other islands from lack of vegetation. Being that I have a limited number of texture slots, I am looking into possibly making this island as a 3D object, so freeing me to use what ever textures I need, independent of the other island textures.
Another thing I had with the original Hawaii map was this:
The real thing
The lack of inclusion of such a geographical feature such as Diamond Head makes navigation a bit more difficult. I am hoping to include Diamond Head as a 3D object and make it in Blender 3D. Then I will take that object and find a way to get it into a map I am making with Microdem. Once I have the map in-game- then will come the task of texturing.
I'm into KevinP's tutorial and it's coming along- I am developing my different map files and it is progressing. I thought it fitting that I would post this today as I'd been playing with this stuff most of the week where I can.
I'll post updates as available, though I am sure I will post some questions when I run into a jam. If anyone's interested in helping, I certainly don't mind sharing credit in the results
Many in the map making community here have been tempting me for some time to check this out- as I always felt there was a need for it (Oahu with Target Is.). Viking, CanonUK, Agracier just to name a few- but what pushed me over the edge was seeing Redko's work
Thanks for any feedback on the concept or anything else
