Hi, Turul

Oleg Maddox must read this kind of stuff at least most of the time, huh?

Fireskull Wrote:My best advice to Oleg Maddox is to let the modders do most of the work and actually incorporate the best modding creations into future Storm of War releases.

I think thats that plan, quoting from this link http://www.simhq.com/_air11/air_341b.html

if i was a game developer for something like this i would probably lose my job within weeks....simply because every time i got the chance to test it out and make a video of something to post on youtube to show development progress, i'd continue to play it. Tongue

I'm not sure who you're talking to Tongue The video has no sound. But IMO everything looks great from my hand. It's just a teaser, Oleg knows what he is doing to keep us hooked for the next update Wink

The aircraft look incredible but the environment still looks very IL2-ish. The IL2 world only has one type of cloud... hopefully SOW has more variety.

Fireskull Wrote:Some of these things can not be fully rendered until NVIDIA releases a few bug free graphics cards in the next product line with DirectX 11 and next generation PhysX technology over the coming months. Objective persons know that Oleg is waiting for these cards to reveal the final rendering stage of graphics for Storm of War. The current graphics cards which his team is using in these videos will not render all the graphics features that the next line of NVIDIA cards will later in 2010.

*cough*

I don't think "bug-free graphics" has anything to do with it this time around. First, the bugs were in IL-2 and not the drivers, and second we aren't using OpenGL this time around, we're using DirectX. Historically-speaking, nVidia is the weaker contender for DirectX. It is not logical to assume Storm of War's performance will be in any way similar to IL-2's on graphics grounds because they have two different primary rendering APIs.

Also, the next line of cards is already here. According to synthetic and practical data, performance for the GTX480 falls below the HD5970 and just barely above the HD5870. The problem? It has a $100 price premium like I predicted for only a modest 10% performance gain. It runs very hot (86 degrees Celcius) and draws a wopping 290W of power. nVidia missed their mark, I'm afraid. What that means for us is that we have to wait another generation before nVidia gets its act together and delivers something that doesn't perform like a six-month old card.

For those curious, the slightly cheaper GTX470 performs above the HD5850 and below the 5870 and runs just as hot and is almost as power hungry. Both units have disabled cores due to defects, meaning they weren't able to manufacture the original spec card in any sustainable quantity. I suspect when they do get some, they'll bin them as GTX490 parts or something to that effect.

Having said all that, I'm pretty positive that today's upper-mid-range cards are more than capable of rendering Storm of War on maximum settings at the average 1680x1050 resolution, and that the enthusiast options can do it at higher resolutions.

Looks ok but nothing in this video is exceptional or even warrants uploading to you tube IMHO, it doesn't really show anything exceptional or ground breaking...the clouds look like balls of cotton wool...no better than Il-2 modded clouds (worse in fact!)..yes the 3d models of the aircraft look a lot better and have more polygons etc as we all already know..the lighting is ok but nothing that amazing..standard self-shadowing which is on most sims these days is nice...the tracers look obvious WIP almost like plasma ion cannons!..the sea looks ok but again not much to see excuse the pun...

So overall its just an obvious early to mid season WIP with use of obvious dumbed down textures for clouds/terrain etc..

So just what is it trying to show?...ehmm...apart from better 3d models nothing really stands out as WOW! in this video.....maybe its the limited low resolution vid or strange angles chosen or fuzzy graphics...its clear we can see the new graphic engine at work and thats nice but its so early days and il-2 looking its kinda pointless uploading these sort of videos! ..... they dont really impress or achieve anything IMO.....No doubt when all the fine tuning and textures are refined/added etc this will look amazing...

to the untrained eye it looks that its simply using an updated il-2 engine code and not a new engine lol....still when its finished this new engine will am sure def blow old mr. il-2 away thats for sure....overall i like the vid but am not overly impressed by it or understand the purpose of uploading such obvious early stage alpha/beta production shots of the new engine....

It shows how the sim currently is to save people from whining on how it looks at the present stage. It's all WIp so keep your hat on; it's already better than anything currently on the shelves; the water beats rise of flight, so do the plane models and even the hit-effects are better than RoF. The only thing that I can see from this that is better in rise of flight are the clouds, otherwise this looks ten times better in my opinion. Of course there is still a lot of work to be done, but I do believe that once this all comes together it will look beautiful Big Grin
