Mod question new to the forum
#1

Hi I am new to this forum. Been playing IL2 since the 1st game was released. Now I am playing IL2 forgotten battles with the Ace expansion pack merged with Pacific fighters. My question is, In order to use the "Mods" such as effects, sound , maps etc, do I need IL2 1946 ? or can the mods be implemented with what I currently have Il2FB, AEP, PF.
Thanks

Hi, Hoghead and welcome! Smile

Yes, you need at least IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.07 to start.

If you read my guide, then things will become much clearer in your mind in a little while:

I went and purchased a digital download version from Amazon. I think it may be 4.07 according to the read-me file. Can this be used still for mods? I was reading your newbie guide and its seemed to say 4.07 for DVD and 4.08 for digital download. Will the patch for the digital downland 4.08 still allow the version to work with mods?

Hoghead,

The digital download was a wise choice. MAKE A COPY of it for safekeeping. You have a right to a backup copy. If you lose the whole thing, then you can redownload, but it is much easier to keep a copy.

You are good to go. If it is indeed 4.07m, then you need to patch to 4.08m. After that, you add the special patch for the 4.08m digital download (link provided in my guide). Next is the 4.09m.

After 4.09m, you should make a copy of the build to that point. Remember to test after each stage of patching to ensure that you did it correctly.

Now you must decide to get the 4.10 or go with a mod pack installed into the 4.09.

I recommend:

Copy your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946
Patch to 4.09m and keep a copy of it.
Patch to 4.10 and keep a copy of that.

Add a mod pack of your choice to one of the copies of 4.09m.

Keep a separate copy of 4.10 for possibly adding a mod pack in the future (they are coming very soon).

I am not giving information about 4.10 in my guide for a few days until I get information from several modding leaders on a timeframe for their mod pack releases. I want new guys to try the existing mod packs because they might only add individual mods to them anyway and I want them to get hooked on mods.

One more question if I may, What do I do with my existing IL2 FB AEP PF merged install on the C drive in program files, should I uninstall and just back up my collected and modded skins?

Good day, Hoghead

There is no problem with more than one installation of IL-2 (in different locations). IL-2 should always be installed outside Program Files. Keep copies of everything that you want to save.

Once you get into a mod pack, then the old IL-2 will be abandoned. The mods are irresistibly good. Do not delete any IL-2 installation: Always use the uninstaller. Delete IL-2 and you'll be very sorry that you did.

I installed the digital version IL2 1946 4.07and during the install missed or skipped a step it seems according to the newbie guide. I caught it too late and am wondering if this is what is causing the problem I am having now. I did not install the digital special patch 4.08 in the correct order. I skipped it and then installed 4.09M and then the special patch 4.08. Now when I start the game the main loading screen shows for about 2 seconds and then the game fails to completely load. No error message is displayed. Should I just start over uninstall, then reinstall in the correct order or, is this a issue caused by a "4.09M wants CD" issue I read about in a similar thread by that title?

Probably it would be best to uninstall/reinstall, it will save time and headaches. Don't forget to copy 4.09m when you get it working, then you can just copy it whenever you want to patch or mod and you'll always have a working backup copy in case anything goes wrong.

OK I got it, Thanks Murph and Fireskull for your help, again I made a mistake.. My mistake was I only installed the digital download patch for the digital download version of the game not including 4.08M along with the digital patch.

You are welcome, Hoghead.

This is the order of installation if you have the digital download version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.08m:

1) IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.08m (digital download version)
2) Special Patch for the digital download version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 (link provided in the Newbie Guide). This allows all mods to have a possibility.
3) Patch to IL-2 Sturmovik V4.09m

4) From here, you can chose one path per installation:

[A] Add a mod pack which is compatible with 4.09 and point the mod pack installer at the main folder. If asked to overwrite, then say YES to ALL.

=OR=

[B] Patch to the new 4.10 (point installer at the 4.09 main folder): Add mods to 4.10, leave it stock, or add a mod pack to it in the future.

For the sake of the readers, I hope that this clarifies the installation path.
