Fw190 D9 vs D13

Hi everybody, I thought I'd bring up something odd I found about the 190 D9 and D13 models in UP 2.x

I noticed the D13 seems to overheat quickly compared to the D9 so I did a little test flying both aircraft at sea-level at full power with methanol injection and a full tank of fuel. I found the D9 capable of reaching 570 km/h and ~48 km before overheating and the D13 capable of reaching 550 km/h and 22 km before overheating. Does anyone know why this may be? I did a little research and both aircraft have the same Jumo 213 engine and the D13 trades away the two 13mm MGs for a single 20mm autocannon. If I'm not mistaken the D13 is supposed to be the 'best' 190 D model besides the Ta 152.

Don't know where you got that from.
The D-9 was equipped with a Jumo 213 A-1 engine.
As for the D-13, only 2 prototypes are known to have been built, one being equipped with a Jumo 213 E and the other with a Jumo 213 F engine.
The Ultrapack 2.01 D-13 Flight Model incorporates the "F" engine on the D-13.
The "A-1" and "F" versions of the Jumo 213 differ in ways from each other as do the results of your test.

I didn't go that far into detail with it: so are there any advantages over the A-1 engine w the F model in UP? - or is lower capability meant to model late-war material shortages?

edit: nvm, looks like the F model is actually a worse version of the engine from what I've looked at.

You should really dig slightly deeper before judging things.
The "E" and "F" engines were high altitude versions of the "A" engine, equipped with a three-speed two-stage intercooled supercharger.
While the rated altitude of the "A" engine is 5.000m, the "E" and "F" have a rated altitude of 9.600m.
Particularly the "F" engine was equipped with an additional high altitude booster (GM-1) and could deliver a WEP of max. 2.050hp.
You must note two facts:
  1. The WEP of the full equipped (MW-50) "A" engine is higher (2.100hp) than that of the "F" engine (2.050hp), but at lower alts.
  2. In order to utilize the full "F"'s performance, you have to switch off and back on WEP at an altitude of above 9.000m.
    Below 9.000m the WEP key (default: W key) enables MW-50, above that altitude it enables GM-1, the high altitude booster.
    Please consider the IL-2 Aircraft Guide for details, the Ta-152H-1 is a pretty well comparable reference.

Bottom line: If you absolutely don't know what you're doing, the D-13 isn't the right aircraft for that task.
However it is superior to the D-9 at high altitudes, and that's where the battles took place at the time the D-13 was developed.
