Very similar question to this one:
http://allaircraftsimulations.com/forum/...hp?t=14213

Quite frankly , there is not much that can be done with 2D environment smoketrails.
3D smoketrail is frustrationg to configure as game engine was not expected to ever handle 3D smoketrail .
Game engine struggle to emit such a high firing rate emit frequency smoketrail in 3D .

Hey Guys,

Interesting video. I was just thinking about this very subject today - the effect that I think remains to be tapped is the ( slightly irregular) spiraling of tracers - to reflect the spinning of the round caused by a rifled barrel - no patronising intended to anyone here, I'm just trying to present a visual/verbal reference that is clear.
I also thought that the sound of the cannon was interesting too - though how realistic I am dubious of - I doubt any gun cam footage ever had a sound recording accompaniment - which suggests that most weapon sounds we get off the net are highly manufactured.

Getting onto a tangent here, but having shot a rifle in real life and shot a supposedly similar one in a game, there's a huge difference in the sound. For starters, the real one will make a very felt impact on your eardrums unless you have plugs in... other than that obvious difference, the game sounds are always either much 'cleaner' or have way too much reverb. In the case of (vanilla) Il-2 I was rather disappointed by the gun sounds, and although the SM 9.3 ones are certainly a huge improvement, they're still quite a ways off. Unfortunately recording high-quality samples of actual live fire is very hard to do without either over-cleaning or the excess reverb... so far I've only seen one or two games which got the sounds dead on.
