Swiss Flugwaffe Moranes
#1

G'day there,

Am not a programmer, skinner or mod creator, just a history buff who enjoys your work on the mods and am a frequent user of them.

As I happen to be mucking around with a hypothetical Switzerland conflict SE template (probably Operation Tannenbaum, circa. late 1940) right now, I was wondering whether there are any moves underway in regard to the Swiss versions of the Morane MS.406? Principally the Swiss licence built D-3800 and D-3801 models originating from a hyrid of the MS.405 & 406. Basically, this was a MS.406 with MS.405 wings.

I believe that three distinct versions can be highlighted in Flugwaffe service. A quick summary on this for those unfamiliar with the subject.

(A) The D-3800 (also known as MS.406H) was a standard MS.406 with one belt fed 7.5mm MG in each wing. Replaced the drum fed guns in the French model (compare the wings of the MS.406 to the MS.410 on this). In IL2 model, remove the gun bulge in each wing. Same HS 12Y31 engine, so performance / flight model will be the same. Production from early to late summer 1940. 76 units built.

(B) The D-3800 improved. From 1943, the Flugwaffe upgraded the D-3800 to D-3801 standard in regards to radiator, hydraulics and exhaust ejectors. Armament and engine remains unchanged. In IL2 model, could use the MS.410 model as it has the fixed radiator and wings, but will need to cut the number of MG's in each wing from two to one.

© The D-3801 (also known a MS.412) was an improved version for the Flugwaffe. Production in very late 1941, reaching units in 1942 of which 224 units were built. The difference for this model was a more powerful HS 12Y51 engine, fixed radiator and a belt fed 7.5mm MG in each wing. In IL2, the Morko would be a very close approximation for this. The engines used in the YaK's and LaGG-3 were actually based on French Hispano-Suiza inline engines anyway. Changes needed to the Morko model, would be to remove the gun bulges in each wing and use the nose section off the MS.410 for proper appearance.

The cockpit instrumentation was also changed from the French versions, though the mods are Machi's anyway. An examples of the Flugwaffe Moranes are preserved in a museum and do recall a flyable example at an airshow a number of years ago.

Thanks for any update on this and looking forward to a Switzerland map that was mentioned elsewhere.

Regards, Warg
