how do you play online with il-2 because i can never semm to play against other people

you need a program, called hyperlobby to find servers, download it and register free, choose forgotten battles as game (cause tere are many different games to choice) and you can join.

also you should have your game patched to 4.08 and after that you can patch to 4.09 but its not nessisary.

Hoover, please don't give undescriptive answers like that, not really helpful if you're talking to a rookie with regards to the IL-2 online setup.
4.09 is an official beta patch that was never / will never be finished.
Patch your game to 4.08m and download the unified installer. Once you have that installed you can switch between the versions with and without mods as there are servers running that allow mods, as well as servers that don't allow mods.
There are also servers which run 4.09 and again, some with and some without mods.
Unified installer 1.1 is the best "whole package" solution there is, so help yourself by getting that.
