The Navy League of Charleston, SC and the Fallen Angels Virtual Air Combat
Wing plan to conduct a Forgotten Battles - Pacific Fighters air combat
flight simulation event from 9 to 12 October, 2009. The focus of this event
is the air campaign flown over the Solomon Islands chain, from August 1942
to the summer of 1943.
This event, known as Guadalcanal Smackdown 09, will be conducted at the
Scientific Research Corporation (SRC) Conference Center, located in North
Charleston, SC. A state-of-the-art Local Area Network (LAN) will be set up
in the SRC facility to support the event, and the event sponsors plan to
invite virtual combat flight simulation enthusiasts, from around the world,
to participate. Highlights of the event include:
- Virtual combat flight simulation enthusiast will fly eight
scenario-driven dogfight missions in the Solomon Islands Campaign area.
Scenarios will cover the full spectrum of air combat operations conducted in
this theater of operations and will be based on detailed mission planning
sessions. The scenarios will be flown on a detailed map of the Solomon
Islands chain, known to historians and military history students as The
Slot. The attendance fee is $75.00/person, which covers the full three days
of planned flight simulation events. There may be an additional $100.00
computer rental fee depending on sponsors, for those who are unable to bring their personal
computers. Event participants are responsible for bringing their own flight
simulation equipment (HOTAS, TrackIR, headsets, rudder pedals, etc.)
- A ceremonial dinner to be held onboard USS Yorktown (CV-10). This
WWII era aircraft carrier is berthed at the Patriots Point Naval Museum, on
scenic Charleston Harbor. The event will include a guest speaker, and a
private tour of the extensive aviation collection at the museum facility.
Cost is $75.00/person.
The historic Charleston, SC area, affectionately known to residents as "The
Low Country", is a perfect location for this event. The Low Country is
beautiful this time of year, and provides an outstanding opportunity for
attendees' friends and family to visit the numerous historic sites in the
area, and shop for antiques and bargains at the local outlet stores. The
event staff will provide welcome aboard Packages, with brochures and tour
recommendations for friends and family members who plan to accompany event
participants.
Participants must pre-register (details to be provided at a later date) for
the event, and pay in advance. All proceeds going to charitable causes
sponsored by the Navy League of Charleston, SC, and are non-refundable. See
