lowering internal cockpit engine sounds
#1

Anyway to lower the internal cockpit engine sound at least on par with the rest of the stock ones without affecting external sounds?
(I know about the presets/sounds/*prs/[spl] but this lowers everything)

I know that these planes were notoriously noisy (all were) but the Spit XIV and the Dora series are almost deafening. Yet the 262 sounds like a whisper!

I had the same issue.

The fix.
1. find the associated sound files, in C:.../files/samples (you will need to know what engine goes with what plane or just listen to the files 'til you find the correct one)

2. Open the file(s) with 'Sound Recorder' (in system32 folder of XP or Vista) you can also find it in the accessories of the start menu. Not sure if the Vista version is the same though, I use XP for IL2

3. Play back the file then under the options or is it tools...? choose 'decrease volume'. Click it about 3 or 4 times to 'taste' then save file.

4. do the same for all appropriate engine 'RPM level' files

5. load/play game choose same plane make note of the sound difference adjust to 'taste'

Hope that helps.

Yes ... the Spits and Dora's. I don't want to give up the sound, especially the XIV ... it sounds so raw and visceral. Just to bring it down a little ... between the stock and it's level.

I have RealAir's Spit for FSX and it sounds great but just a notch lower than ours. By the way .... my hats are off to the "sound-men" of the XIV. It sound exactly like RealAirs .... it would almost be better than RealAir's except for the odd crackling I get once in a while.

Thanks 86 ... That's exactly what I wanted to know. (I posted right after you)

86,

This looks like it's modifying the basic sound file that is modified externally AND internally.
I don't mind that Griffon/DB601/Sabre growl externally, but in cockpit, I'd like it at least somewhat close to the stock (sound modded) planes.

There are MANY things that affect sound level and many ways to fix. Here are a few ways

1) Preset Files. These control how sounds work for specific engines. They are located within Files/Presets/Sounds. Within them there are many settings but [SPL] controls sound intensity level (setting in dB). Default is 100dB. Altering this mainly affects the volume and distance heard outside. I don't recommend doing this, really a last resort and as mentioned, only affects external volume

2) Sound Settings. Try altering the sound quality and turning hardware acceleration on or off. Depending on your soundcard brand, you may find different settings can alleviate the problem.

3) Samples. Not all of the aircraft samples are normalized or of the same quality, hence they do vary a lot in volume. I recommend using a free program called Audicity. It will allow you to edit all the sound files and make them normalized and cleaner. Samples are located in files/samples. You need to alter the SAMPLES to make internal sounds quieter.

I hope that helps. Sound balancing is pain since som many facotrs affect it in IL-2/
