Mod Idea for ejected brass?
#1

Ejected brass casings: Is it possible to extend the amount of time before they disapear? Could that be someting in the Conf file? Anyone know? Anyone want to attempt it? Has anyone attempted/modded it? Anyone care?

Just a thought I had. Figure with todays systems it shouldn't bog anyone down if they stay on the screen a bit longer. No biggie just something to add a tiny bit more to the game.

It would be cool if they had physical properties so if you were tight on someones 6 and they droped all that brass it could bounce off your canopy...but that I think is asking too much. Tongue

A weapon's property, you mean?

No Aj, I think you'll find he means that they had physical mass, such as a leaf for example, not enough to cause damage, but enough that they 'bounce' off a canopy, with the associated 'tink' sound for example...

I highly doubt this could be possible with Il2. SoW series however, I would'nt be surprised. I mean hell, they have it in FPS's, so it wouldnt be too hard figure it out for SoW.

Or youre flying a jet and it gets sucked into the turbines, causing the fan blades to shatter followed quickly by a catastrophic structural failure

Yes, Magpie that is what I meant about physical propeties, and i like the idea of them getting sucked into a jet engine. also on that note...one could have their canopy open and watch it fill up with spent casses.

But again...I seriously doubt that could happen with this game engine and again all I'm really requesting is if the brass could stay on the screen a few seconds longer. It's not much but I think it would add a wee bit more depth and realism to the game.

To push it to the extreme...It would be cool if they made it all the way to the ground before disapearing.

Not doable with today's civilian-available technology. Consider this; most planes shoot about 100 rounds a second. That means for every single shell fired, the game has to make a new game object one hundred times a second. This, in addition to the actual fired bullets.

The problem with that is that it would cause a tremendous lag hit whenever you fired the guns. If you want a good example, try building a mission with eight ME-323's with paratroopers, and have them all drop at the same time. Track how much lag you get. That's what would likely happen in any case where the shells are ejected. Or even try B-25's or A-20G's with parafrags.

Basically, the shell would become an object similar to a dropped bomb, and because it would have its own physics, it would kill the game. It wouldn't be so bad with one airplane, but compound it with MANY aircraft. Possibly the best example of weapon-induced lag is flying toward an enemy aircraft carrier with no ROF reduction. I find that almost every time I lose a good number of frames. That's what would happen with what you suggested.

Good idea, just not doable with today's technology. Smile

As stated above

Still hoping someone out there can extend the "brass life" :?
