Doubled my framerate..
#1

I don't have a very new pc but I was always able to play IL2 with a decent frame rate while the graphics were acceptable (for me). Lately however my framerate started to drop. I thought it was due to the many mods I have downloaded; some improve graphics but there is always a price to pay for eye candy.
Last week however all my USB devices were no longer recognized. Also the light of my optical mouse burned very faint. I suspected a power problem since my previous motherboard (also an Asus board) died on me with a power problem as well. So I bought an external USB hub with it's own power supply and all my devices worked again!
Then I started to play IL2 again (was not able to since my ruther and joystick are both USB) and it played totally different. :?: When I checked my framerate it was in the 80+ (before 20+) Confusedhock:
So I maxed out everything an now still I have a framerate of 40-50 on maps like the slot!
Also my plane now actually reacts to the joystick and enemy planes don't drop out of my gunsight anymore when I pull the trigger.
I guess my pc has always been underpowered and the use of USB devices dropped my framerate enormously. So for all you guys out there with an Asus A7N8X motherboard (maybe other boards as well) and a graphical card that is always hungry for power (I have an ATI X1950) you might want to check your power supply if you think your framerates are not as high as they should be. I built my own pc and have a 450 watt powersupply; I read that it should be sufficicent, but apparently this is not enough.
I never thought it possible that' s why I posted this.
I am enjoying IL2 all over again: feels like a brand new game! 8)

Wow, thats something!!

Glad you are having a wild ride there....

But yes, you think it has to do with your USB ports on your mainboard? Your USB hub must be seperately powered then?

No?

USB ports dont require there own power. If they dont work its A. The motherboard is broken or B. The System Drivers are somehow conflicting. This could also mean that your usb may be disabled. Check your Device manager. I use a 500watt btw, im about to upgrade to a 1200watt.
I used a asus board once, i had issues with my webcam being pluged in. Every thing would lag without reason.

Very interesting. USB devices don't draw that much power to cause problems like that. It is possible there is a problem with your motherboard OR your PSU is severly undervolting. Very odd but even a driver issue could account for your improvement in performance

Anyway, your problem is solved so good onya! Happy flying

I know it sounds too stupid to be true, but I haven' t changed any drivers or configuration or anything else; just added a self powered usb hub.. Confusedhock:
I think somehow the USB devices where using up power from gpu\cpu..
Anyway; thanks for your responses and maybe someone with a similar problem (low framerates with good graphics card) will have benefit from this?

I work with computers for a living; my usb devices showed no anomalities in the device manager; everything looked ok. Uninstalled devices, rebooted, re-installed: no go. Looked on the internet for solutions: nothing. I too thought of a hardware error and maybe this is just the first sign of my motherboard dying, but for as long as it lasts I enjoy it.

This sounds exactly like my problem. I had no problems running other games (like Red Orchestra) because I don't use USB devices playing them. I always thought IL2 was just too heavy for my pc and getting 20 fps with my setup was just the max I could I achieve..
