Two problems with IL-2
#1

I have begun to notice two perplexing problems with my current setup. I play IL2 1946/ 409b1m with UI and most of the downloads. These two problems only began recently but seem to be increasingly frequent(or maybe that's my imagination).

Problem #1: I double click my IL2,exe shortcut to start my game, and it seems to generate two games, one superimposed on the other. When the start up is completed, the game version showing is frozen. I click Ctrl+ Alt+ Del, to close the frozen game, which works most of the time. Once it's closed, there is another, open copy of the game, showing on the lower tool bar, which functions normally. I seem to have gotten around this problem by making a short cut of the il2fb.exe. This seems to open a single, fully functioning game version. What is the difference between the two exe files?

Problem #2: Sometimes in a mission that has gone on for a longish time, the screen freezes and a notice appears stating "Application error; The instruction at 0x0dc50a57 referenced memory at 0x0ec583b0. The memory could not be read." At that point it tells me to click ok to close the game. I do and the game closes. Of course, this seems to be after a particularly good score on my part. This has happened in several different campaigns. If repeated the mission can usually be completed without problems. I sometimes think I can avoid the problem if I select automatic pilot, or the fast forward command, but again, that might be wishful thinking.
Can anyone help me with either or both of these problems?

1) The only .exe to use to start any of the latest versions of IL-2 is "il2fb.exe". Some older third-party utilities require the old "il2.exe" to be present in order to work, but it is not present unless you put it there (generally by copying il2fb.exe and renaming the copy to il2.exe). Your old il2.exe is probably not compatible with the newer (mod?) version ... or something.

The difference in the .exe files is that il2.exe was used for the original game. Since the "Forgotten Battles" expansion pack was released, the main game executable has been il2fb.exe . This file has evolved over time as new expansions/versions have been released.

In any case, use only the shortcut to il2fb.exe to launch the game.

2) Sounds like a memory leak, which is highly probably on some of the massive new maps. IL-2 has always struggled with memory leak issues (ask anyone who runs a dedicated server how much memory IL-2 can consume over time). The only work-arounds I'm aware of: get more system RAM, or fly shorter missions. Those in the know can correct me if I'm wrong... please!

Thanks for your answer. I'll take your advice and look into more RAM and shorten my time on the missions.
