Very simple go into the quick mission builder and setup whatever you wnat to fight and fight with.
Then start the mission. hit Esc, make and save video file then back into mission. Turn on the "T" wingtip smoke for player.
Then get with it, and fly the mission.
Then turn off video when you finish.
Now.. replay video using outside views and track yourself by outside views. You cna push in and out and push the mouse button and zoom in and out on the video. I belive the outside view keystroke is Shift F2 .
Anyway, watch the video and what you are doing. You can also jump around into the enemy that shot you down and see what you did.
The important thing is... The wingtip smoke will help you keep track of yourself and better get a feel for how you are manuevering.
One thing you'll learn for sure. The slip ball is critical to good shooting. Most newbs don't get it for along time.
This will jumpstart you into knowing and seeing your mistakes.
There are a couple good books on aircombat filying and I think there is a good ebook for free. You might google it.
Good luck
Yip, quick mission builder is perfect for training yourself. Fly with friendlies and shoot them down for target practice will help you learn where your rounds are actually hitting in real time and you can take your time. Go one on one with rookie enemy, then average, veteran, ace, 2 novice, 2 average, 2 veteran etc..
If you get nailed by someone online repeatedly, fly against it offline to learn its weaknesses for next time
Pick a plane you really like regardless of how badly you may actually fly it or what other people say about it, and google every bit of information you can about it. Theres also plenty of tips in IL2 forums around the net if you know what information on what plane you're looking for. Allot of information is specific to certain aircraft.
Study basic Air Combat Manouvers (ACM) and use to your advantage the ones that best suit the plane you want to fly and against the enemy you'll most likely be against.

One tip; push the stick full front and right or left. This'll send you into an 'outside barrel roll' which is very good for dodging enemy bullets. There are few who can actually hit a guy doing this. On purpose that is. Remember to use the rudder too, if the rolling action seems to be slow.
The trick with that is to wait for the aeroplane to finish the outside barrel roll. No pilot can keep that up for long (if the aeroplane can take the strain at all) and sooner or later, he'll think of doing something else and thats when you fire.
In other words, be patient. Stalk your kill, fire when he presents a good target, not when he's jinking all over the place - thats just wasting ammo. All pilots are human beings. They need time to think and react. The experienced ones are quicker (they do a lot of things automatically without thinking) but even they stop sometimes. Whilst he's jinking around, he's using energy. He's slowing down. Try to anticipate his turns and maneovers and fly as direct as you can (watch your six!). Before long he'll do something that makes him vulnerable, so choose your moment, and don't waste ammo blasting away at long distances.
That's good advice and it works well with the human pilots on HL.
Going against the AI, nuther story. LOL
To survive on HL: Find a wingman/buddy, work together, live longer.
