Hello; I have a problem. I have tried to mod my IL-2 4.08m to allow mods from this site. I have followed Cirxtips Idiots guide to modding your IL2, word for word, without any deviations, 3 times. 3 times I have failed. What happens is the IL2 starts, shows the opening screen for about 3 seconds, , then shuts down to desktop. Nothing. It doesn't even get past 5% loading. I cannot follow the guide any closer. I am at my end of trying and need some ideas.
I have a GTS8800 NVidia 256 card with an intel dual core 2.8 processor and 2.0 Ram on XP windows. IL-2 worked fine until I tried to mod it. I did the backup IL-2 1946 and can use it for now. I used the Primary MOD activator as per the guides instructions.
An update. I have checked the buttons file that is referred to in another thread. That is all good and properly in place. But now I am having the opening screen then crash to desktop at 5% problem.

You're having the same problem I had. There are two main items you need:
1. AAA 4.09 patch.
2. the files fb_3do19.SFS, fb_3do20.SFS, and fb_maps15.SFS. without these files, your game will crash at 5%.

Did you run IL2setup too and checked under the "sound" tab if the sampling rate was set to 44100Hz?

Thanks for the response. I have installed the 4.09 patch for sure and the SFS files mentioned are all in there. The buttons file is also installed as per forums threads. I can only think of asking, after all this, does the MOD activator I selected have anything to do with it? Should I try another one ie. Unified installer....I used the Primary MOD activator as per the idiots guides instructions, but I saw somewhere in that guide about different activators. If so how do I select the correct buttons file to go with it?

Seriously - read JAMF's post. 5% CTD usually means sound is not set to 44100hz. Don't muck about with anything else until you check that. -viking

Hey dude!

Dont worry, we will soon sort you out.

5% crash is sometimes caused by the sound setting as the guys say, but 90% of the time it points to a missing SFS file. 5% is almost never anything else.

In any event, please do the following so we can norrows it down.

1) Put a minus ( a "-" ) in front of both the mods and the files folder (so it will be called "-mods" and "-files") and try to launch the game and tell me what happens.(putting as minus in front of it makes the game ignore the folders when loading)
2) Please take a screenshot of your entire IL2 folder (the main one, with IL2fb.exe in it) so I can see if there are fuunny files of files missing you may not even notice
3) Please say what version of the game you are taking the screenshot of (408 or 409)
4) Right click on your IL2fb.exe and select properties, and tell me what size it is exactly, and what date it was modified.

The faster you can get the above back to me, the faster we can nail this. If you cant post the screenshot, email it to me at

also, it is essential that you tell us where exactly in the process did your game begin to fail to boot:

Did it work as a clean 4.08?
And after installing the Mod Activator?
if it still booted, what about after installing wrapper.dll update?
if it still booted, what about after installing 4.09 update?
if it still booted, what about after installing AC Installer?

And so on, knowing where the problem began will help a lot. Please give as much detail as possible.

And in the screenshot, make sure to display the contents of the folder as a DETAILED list, so I can see the sizes of all the files.


I have to go now, but I will be back on Saturday. If by then you still have this issae, we can hook up on email or skype and I will walk you through it. If you have sorted it by then, please let us know and say how you did it, so others can learn.

Hello again, Sorry for getting back so late, I have been away from home for a few days. Now what I have recently attempted was a completely new download and install of the Il-2 1946. The version is 4.08m. Once this was accomplished I started with the first step of installing the Mod activator v5_2_IL2_4_08. The game now just quits. Dosen't even show an opening screen shot let alone reach 5%. Blank screen for a few seconds then back to desktop.
I was trying to find the "sound" file to configure to 41000 Hz. Could only locate it as SamplingRate=1 or 2 in the config file. Neither one makes a difference.
Tried the dash in front of the Files and Mods folder in the directory. No change.
Have completed the rest of the installs as per the Idoits guide, and at each stage there is no change in the running the program. Blank screen and desktop.
