Aliens messed up my rig!
#1

Remember the old rule, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"?

Well, I had luckily installed Canons new Channel map and was happily working on a campaign for it. Then I remembered someone recommending you the so called S3TC fix, changing the TexCompress=2. And I thought "why not give that one a chance as well?". So i did.

And... all hell broke lose. Not only did it freeze up IL-2 so completely, that I had to do a forced reboot of the machine - it didn't even react to ctrl+alt+del. Something happened that has affected my whole rig, with strange graphics effects breaking out even on the desktop. Despite numerous reboots.

After the leaving the PC switched off I did several attempts to use new config.ini, copying them from this site.

But the problems persists = after a while there are strange stuttering on the desktop (without even starting IL-2) together with equally strange jagged "lightnings" across the desktop, the icons have lost their small boxed arrows, etc.

WTF? :hanged:

How in Gods name can a simple change in config.ini make a computer pretty near inoperable? Is the fact that the problems always take a couple of minutes to appear a sign that there is something wrong with the hardware???

Also: take this as warning! Don't do as I did... Well, at least not before doing something as simple as backup-ing your old config.ini

Hi Potlava
Sorry to hear of your problems mate - I had the opposite - my Channel map kept giving me CTD until I used the S3TC fix..? Now, it works fine.
It sounds like some setting has changed on your actual graphics card, or maybe the card has a problem. Have a look in your Graphics card control panel for possible unwanted changes...
Could you post with your machine specs, it will be easier for someone to help you with this info...

I can tell you this, it wasn't aliens...might have been Bigfoot, but definitely not aliens... Big Grin Big Grin

download new and install
then open any il-2 game disk and put the original conf.ini in your game re copy paste.
then fire up the game and reprogram the settings the way you want them.

no m8 thats not what he meant, its the manually changin' of TexCompress=2 in his conf.ini file that crashed his pc and it looks asif it corrupted more in his pc than the game,
setting the S3TC in the il2 setup is no problem and for most of us that works.

Poltava i had a similar thing with an il2 crash involving canonuk maps, and it affected all my games and pc [weird color images and freezes], ...i didn't have sound so i reinstalled the sound drivers + vid card driver and everything was solved, it doesn't mean it wil work for you but you could try.... good luck m8

My advice would be to reinstall the drivers for the video card, uninstall them fully using driver sweeper (free) first then find and install latest drivers - this is in hope that the settings in the conf.ini somehow damaged or corrupted the driver installation. If this has caused problems outside Il2 then its the only 'fix' I can think of - It might also be worth reinstalling direct x.

I cant think of any other fixes, the only other problem that comes to my mind is that the graphics card is damaged.

I hope you get it all sorted out.

Thanks guys, for advice and support. Will do a total makeover tonight, and report back.

But it's obvious that you must be damned careful when tinkering with the config.ini... (And at least take a backup - silly me!!!)

Get Driver Sweeper: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Sweep your drivers, restart the computer, install new drivers and restart the computer again.

I followed the advice, fixed the drivers, and that did it!

My PC is running as normal again, and I can go back to campaign building again.

Many, many thanks!!!
