Torrents are a viable option that we are looking into; if only for the alternative bandwidth reducing options.

The only thing that would be a issue is the safety of the users that go the torrent route - but if people understood that we cannot guarantee the safety of the torrent (which is inherent with torrents in general) then we would have no issue using them.

the problem with torrents are this, torrents only work when people seed, and as we all know, too many people leech and fail to seed, so downloads will be very very slow.
i think mediafire and other upload sites would be a lot better for the type of downloads we use here.

You only need a group of starting ppl (confidence ppl) who have the Files and sharing them with a good bandwidth. I offer myself to be one of them. These ppl have to mantain their computers on many hours the first two or three days to let users download the packs. Later, the download will have its own life and we won't be necessary.

When U.I. was launched and and the official download was saturated, some ppl shared their files through Torrent, giving the rest the necessary information. But Admins here deleted that information on forum forbidding this way. Ppl was sharing their files already.

wilhelm, i know how torrents work, christ knows i have torrented loads of stuff ( and seeded for about a week after each) but i have noticed a sharp incline of leechers over the last couple of years and am finding it taking longer and longer to download similar size files. It is ok if the files are popular and people seed but most people just take and disconnect straight after downloading.
how many times do you see on torrent sites " please seed!!!!" in the comments.

i am not saying it is a bad idea, and we do need to cut the costs of the site, but there are better ways

Certainly, torrents should not be relied upon as the only option for download.

But they shouldn't be completely discarded either. Torrent download can complement other options such as direct link or some file hosting service (rapidshare etc).

I too am willing to seed for at least 2-3 days non-stop.
