Question - Size of Mapmods Folder

I have been trying to figure out if the size of the Mapmods folder, as a sub-folder of the MODS directory, plays a role in determining the start up time of the game.

I know for instance that however large the size of a skins folder, it luckily is not taken into account when starting up the game.

But I can't seem to determine if that is the same with the mapmods folder. This is interesting to know since the maps folder can also end up taking an alarming amount of space - mine is 33 gig already - in an already often inflated MODS folder to begin with.

So what I mainly mean to ask is if it would make any sense in keeping a large number of maps (and textures) elsewhere when you are certain not to be using them in an upcoming game?
