The Marines of Wake Island did not escape. They sank 2 destroyers and shot down zeros until all their wildcats were out of commission and then they picked up rifles and defended the island from the ground. The Japanese had to call in a pair of aircraft carriers and 1500 additional troops to take on the 450 airwing Marines and civilian contractors.

If you want to talk about escape, look up Admiral Pye who left them all their to die 'cause he was afraid to engage the enemy.
