Is it possible to take 1.2 sounds and add them to hsfx or UP?

Yes, add them the same way you would any sound to UI, either in the files section or the MODS section.

Can you elaborate on how to go about doing this for HSFX or UP 2.0?

1. In your MODS folder (if HSFX has a "-" infront of it's MODS folder, remove the "-" to activate the MODS folder) create an folder called Sound mod (or anything else you want)
2. Create inside the Sound mod folder two differernt folders, one called Presets and the second called Samples
3. In your Presets folder create a folder called Sounds

MODS
.........Sound Mod
.........................Presets
....................................Sounds
.........................Samples

You place the motor.XXXXXX.prs or weapon.XXX.prs files in the Sounds folder.
You place your XXXX.wav files in the Samples folder

You are welcome.

The only thing you have to be careful of is that the UI 1.2 sounds are not "optimized". What I mean is that you can/will hear crackling from certain sounds since they were not "tweaked" like the HSFX/UP/SAS sounds to prevent that crackling.

Is it possible to get the UI1.1/UI1.2 sounds as downloadable zips which I only need to extract to my MODS folder? Or can I extract them in an easy way from an existing installation of IL2 4.09b1m+UI1.1?

The UI 1.1 sound files are located in the "files" section of your UI 1.1 mod. Grab the appropriate files as I list them above and put them into the MODS folder using the correct file structure as outlined above.

Hey panama, I followed your instructions which I greatly appreciated, but I am still missing the pop of the starter shell going off. I miss this small detail. Any idea why I wouldn't be hearing it?

I'm not a sound expert, but there are at least three parts to sound. 1. the presets which define the sounds, 2. samples which are the sound wav's and 3. the link to the item saying which sound to use. As a result, as a guess, it sounds (bad pun) like you are missing the link portion and those are hidden in the "java" files.
