No space? :o What on earth are you using for a Hard Drive? My main HSFX install is only 15Gb - half of which is taken up by skins in Paintschemes. Even a 80Gb HDD should be able to cope with more than one install. I currently have five copies of Il-2 on my hard drive: 4.09m vanilla in case I need to make another copy, HSFX 4.11 for everyday use, HSFX 4.11 for mapbuilding, HSFX 4.11 for map testing, an old 4.11 that got corrupted by adding mods and another HSFX for beta testing.

HSFX more or less replaced UI 1.2; i.e. there are no plans for any more UIs (unless things have changed recently). It ultimately comes down to whether you like a trouble-free and fast-loading game (mind you, I fly with an HSFX with no extra mods other than maps) or a bloated and convoluted do-it-yourself compilation using UI.

My single SATA drive runs everything from the two OS's (windows XP/ Ubuntu dualboot setup) to over a hundred software packages, ~two hundred legacy DOS applications and games, two dozen game disc Isos, emulation software and images for 6 different consoles (Ps1 & 2, N64, SNES, Gamecube, and Dreamcast)...

...suffice it to say I'm cramped for space. And thanks to this **** crummy economy, I have NO MONEY for even a backup drive.

Y'know what, if you're going to be a better-than-you @$$munch, do me a favor and go juggle some 100-lb bombs.

The only thing 'convoluted' about UI has been the download size, which HSFX can hardly boast to be better at. The 'convoluted' part has come when installing things NOT IN UI. For the love of pan-fried peanut butter, why isn't there some requirement for a standardized installer for mods?

...whatever. My install is completely borked now. Will have to reinstall the whole thing from scratch so maybe I'll give your gold-plated, divinely-inspired HSFX a try this time around.

Catch you later.

Not quite sure what all the aggression is about :?: . You asked a question and I tried to answer it. And if you don't believe me, ask the AAA guys if there's going to be another UI, or whether they're sticking with HSFX. Plus, I'm merely saying it how I see it. For me, HSFX is a MUCH better deal than the UI ever was.

After one Hugh-Jass download and some confusion, I finally have the whole shebang up and running. Yes, even the History mod.

I've nailed down the timeframe for the campaign. It will begin sometime on May 30 1942, corresponding to a recon flight of two Catalinas of Patrol Squadron 44: LtCdr Robert C. Brixner and Cdr. Frances M. Hughes. The flight took off around 0400 and returned around 1500, having a mixup with Zeros from Wake Island around 0910. Both Catalinas were damaged but returned. This may be the aforementioned beginning mission, when I get the island design right.

Thanks to the expanded Midway map it was little problem to place the Catalinas, with 4 planes each to represent VP-23 and VP-44. They each carry a "Default" loadout, are set to AI only, no parachute and have zero fuel load. (to keep them from trying to take off; there's no static version of the planes! X-[ )

The heavy bombers are few enough that I think I can place them all without killing FPS: 7 B-17E and 4 B-26B Marauders. If someone's made a B-26 model to add, that would be dandy, otherwise B-25s should do well enough. (any way to rotate static planes, btw? I'm sure there's SOME way but I'm not just finding it)

Will try to find some maps of the islands to try and determine where to place the Stuarts and AA defenses next.

Ok. So far my Google-fu has completely failed me on my map-finding efforts. Therefore I've just had to place things where they seem logical; trying to distribute the AA and tanks in a somewhat reasonable manner. Suggestions and corrections are more than welcome...I feel like I'm blundering randomly about.

Ran into a snag placing the PT boats - even though their draft should be almost nothing, I can only place them along part of the dock on the left island. Any way to fix this :-? Somewhere to tweak their stats?

Also, if there's a decently easy way (I'm not an expert at this stuff) to make a static model of the Catalina, that would be much better for the 'dispersed' look of off-duty planes.

EDIT: And just to clarify, the 4 Bettys and 2 Emilys are not going to be part of the mission. I just threw them in as a test of how deadly the AA fire would be with what's in place already. The answer is "not nearly as much as you'd think"...which when you think about it is a testament to how realistic the simulator is.

You must learn Patience to master Google-Fu.

This last one will show you ALL artillery locations on both islands as well as fuel/supply depots etc.

Though I fly through the valley of death, I will fear no evil.....

...and if you look at my Midway you will see that I put gun emplacements in these positions, based on this map.

Gah...thanks...it's rather embarrassing how badly I'm failing at finding things on this subject, given that I've been working with computers since I was 5.

Got some good news and bad news. Good news is I have a shot at some kind of employment as camp cook. Bad news is that said camp is a postage-stamp affair way out in the boondocks of a flyover state. Amazingly enough they DO have Internet access, but there's no way on planet Earth I'll be able to lug along my desktop. And my ancient laptop is about as capable of running IL-2 as a Nintendo 64 is of running Super Smash Brothers Brawl. So unless I can somehow get my hands on a fairly modern laptop for the price of $0.00, this project will be on an enforced hiatus for possibly the entire summer.

And JUST when I was making some progress! :grumpy:

So yeah, that's about the state of things. Thanks all for your help so far. This is not the end; I WILL be back to at least finish this mission, and I'll be around the forums semi-weekly at least 'till then.

With all that in mind here's the most recent update:

Managed to place enough planes to represent the fighter squadrons, including the entire force of Wildcats (all 6 of them). The SBD's will have to be SBD-3s instead of SBD-2s. No big deal there. However the Vindicator doesn't seem to have been modded in yet, sadly enough. Hopefully that will change in the near future...leaving out the 4 B-26's won't be a biggie, but the entire Vindicators squad missing will be rather noticeable.

Changed all the static aircraft to have USSA markings instead of USSR markings (*facepalm*), and managed to place the torpedo boats just dandy after discovering static boats can go where regular ones cannot.
