1628 Failed to Complete Installation
#1

Earlier today I discovered upon trying to play online for the first time in a very long time that there was an IL-2 4.09.
I installed the patch but it completely disagreed with my mods and wouldn't load properly, I decided a fresh install would be best for installing new versions of mods and the such (I also found out about AAA today).
Uninstalled without a problem, but then when I went to install the game again it got to "Preparing to install..." and stopped with the error "1628: Failed to Complete Installation" and had to be closed.

I've tried removing all trace of the original IL2 1946 installation with no luck and I'm hoping there's some fix for this? It's not nice to think I was playing 4.08 fine just a few hours ago and now I can't even install the game.
If my disk is buggered (It doesn't look it, there doesn't seem to be a single tiny scratch on the thing, and I mean the .msi file rather than the actual DVD), which I hope it isn't... Is there any other way to get the game installed? Will mods like HSFX work with a copy from Steam? If it turns out nothing can be done then I could at least have a handy digital copy without the patching mess?

Hello, Furohman and welcome to All Aircraft Simulations. Smile

I feel that the first thing needed is to look at my guide which is packed with essential basics and links to more information:

Fireskull: We must never install anything over our mods because things can be overwritten. Save your mods in another location, preferably the original downloads or mod pack, and install in the proper order. My Newbie Guide covers this. Smile

All Aircraft Simulations. AAA was the predecessor of this website: New owner, new leaders, more friendly, mod pack neutral, etc, etc. Smile

This is why we should always have a copy. Smile

Install it out Program Files. If already out, then slightly change the name of the main IL-2 folder. It won't hurt anything as long as you know where it is and remember to point future patches and mods at the folder. I do it with multiple installations of different IL-2 versions and the name change works just fine. Smile

In general-yes, however you must apply the special patch for digital downloads onto the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 V4.08m, as revealed in my Newbie Guide. If a conflict does arise, which is unlikely, then you can reinstall a specific mod or file. That probably won't be an issue for a guy like you who knows about computer and IL-2 already. Smile

We should have a copy of every important thing. Smile

Yeah, I probably should have made a copy of the installation in case something like this happened. According to Microsoft, error 1628 is a corrupt .msi file, so it seems unlikely it can be fixed. I don't know what could have caused it but my DVD drive is a murderous old thing.
It's probably easiest for me to just buy the game again on Steam, might even wait until Christmas when they have all the big sales. So for then or sooner... It's Download Game->Install Digital Download Special Fix->Patch 4.09 in the same way a patch is installed to a retail copy->Mods, right?

Thanks for the fast reply.

By the way, if you want to fly on STEAM server and fly with mods in other situations, then you will need TWO installations of IL-2 to do this:

1) One intallation without mods for only STEAM.

2) Second copy installation with patches installed and mods for other flying.

The two do not mix.

If you bougtht the game on STEAM, they likely will let you redownload it without extra cost. Direct2Drive does that, so there's a good possibility.

Before I rebought the game I tried some things which had worked with installation problems in the past.

Copying contents of DVD onto the hard drive - Didn't Work
Running a.exe (Setup preparation) instead of setup.exe or IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.msi - Didn't Work
Clearing Temp Files (I'd amassed a fair ton over time) - Didn't Work

Then I discovered that an earlier installation of something else hadn't closed properly. I'd only been checking for msiexec.exe and setup.exe and the process was called Idriver.exe (The capital i threw me off) and so far the installation is working properly. Saved me £10 too.

I thought I'd post the things I had done in case somebody else had the same problem in the future and any of them worked because I know how annoying a help thread search result can be when it either just ends unresolved or with the OP announcing that they "Fixed It!" and leaving forever.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "STEAM" server, Fireskull, but most modpacks, such as the UltraPack and HSFX, include a "switcher" or some other method via JSGME to disable the mods and run the game as stock unmodded, so it's possible to do it with a single install, if desired.

8FS_Bulau,

Generally this is true, but in the process of tinkering with IL-2 to get a mod running, guys have sometimes ruined there ability to fly in the server that they want.
