The Reskinning Cockpits Thread
#1

Following deSAD's bombshell of information in the Map editing discussion, we can now open almost every TGA there is. Namely, set the tga you want to view as your new background0 splashscreen and hit the printscreen button as the game is loading (Fraps works well for this).

As it happens, the F4U tga's can be opened the normal way. These are 256 x 256 dimension images. As are all the other cockpit tga's that I have been able to open with photoshop. It is probable that the other 'locked' tga's for cockpit skins are 256x256 also. With a little trail and error, we might be able to create skin templates for some of the older aircraft in the sim. The 109, P-47 and Ju87's are among those which are begging for a facelift.

Many of the 109's share the same textures. Here for example, is the "bf109F2planks" texture that several variants use. Skin one, and you get most of the others thrown in for free Smile

Spent 20 minutes messing about with the tga I posted above. Five minutes of that was spent uploading the pics Smile

I always disliked the colour of the 109 cockpit frames, so i darkened them up to see how it'd look.

It's a pity I suck at photoshop though. :?

I'll be intereste to see what others can come up with.

Looking for something like this?

Not sure how it maps, just playing with a template from your image.

The highest priority ought to go to the bar at the top of the YAK-3 cockpit. Take a look at it and you'll see what I mean!

Me too, that would be a practically new 109, YES!! With new cockpit and tires and whatnot textures it would really be a new experience, as with the new sounds. Looking forward to it!

I'm dying to ask, how the heck did you do that???
I'm stuck at work for the next ten hours, but I'd love to try that technique out myself.

Btw: Is there any interest in providing extraxcted tga's of individual aircrraft for people to improve?
Imagine having VP skins inside and out, lol. Smile

1) click on posted image and "Save image as"

2) Open in Photoshop, make duplicate layers use remove white/black plugins.

3) save as PSD

4)some more editing in PSP, colourizing etc. adjust layers add patina and scratches

Just need to paste this over a copy of the original .tga and it should work. From other .tga files I've tried it looks like IL2 needs them to be a specific size in kb - well thats how I got the splash screen to work.

I've got the extractor but still figuring out where to look for some of these files. Need the size in pixels and in kb before I can try adding any . Happy to do some edits though.
It might be handy to have something like "Adlabs panel finder" as a tga to help with mapping.
