What you need to get IL2 FB 4.05 working?

Find and download the switcher someone made to switch between 4.07 and 4.04/4.05. Extract that and you will see in the various folders the exact difference between the versions.

Heres wat was needed. exe, 4 or 5 .dll files, files.sfs and a few 3do's and maps.
So for the reverse proecess all u need is the orig .dll's the files.sfs leave the new 3DO's, Apply the old .exe and done.

So is it really that cross compatible?

We would lose some things like X-4 functionality, the new view range etc. But if we could get 4.08 running with the old exec but using the new 3DO's and somehow integrate the new objects it would open some possibilities:
- Use of the original new 3do files would require that the person own copies of both 4.04 and 4.08 (thus preventing this from being piracy)
- It could allow us to use cockpits, objects and maps from 4.08 in the creation of mods
- If it is possible it should enable use to edit loadouts and weapons on the new planes

U have to reallise thats alot of work, there are java classes involved, some of which may contain some security that some people on 4.05 want to be kept open.
I Honesstly dont care.

I don't quite understand the point about security in 4.05: Do you mean that parts of 4.08 security would have to be bypassed or that some of the security systems from 4.08 would have to be added in 4.05?

In anycase, I do realise that it is a lot of work. But it is probably the direction with the greatest potential.

We have access to 4.08 flight model and engine data as well as aircraft 3d structures. I don't know much about editing 4.05 but, assuming that we can create new entries, and call the 3d models, textures and animations from 4.08 it should be possible to reconstitute most aircraft, objects and maps (only loosing the new joystick routines, X-4 missiles and a few minor updates contained in the exec).

This needn't be done all at once either, it could be done in small expansion packs activating 4.08 material in the 4.05 file system.
