Flying with icons when you start playing this game is ok but continuing to do it after years of playing resembles of riding bicycles with the helping wheels on forever Big Grin . Don't flame me... I still fly Lock On with icons (dots only) but, I am a complete n00b at it and I don't question it Big Grin .

Is it possible to mod the distances at which plane LODs change? The switch from dot to plane is WAY too close. I can be just a couple thousand feet above an H8K, a HUGE bird, and it's a dot unless I am zoomed all the way in on FOV.

At such a time, in normal "scan for contacts" mode, with my FOV set fairly wide, I could EASILY fly over a plane that shows up on my monitor as a 2 pixel "dot" when it should be an extended object that is actually about the same visual size as a range icon. (I checked). Many problems would be solved by drawing the min LOD model farther out.

If you don't fly with icons than why are you posting in this thread, spamming, trolling?

BTW I'm glade that you have seen PBY with B25 cockpit in RL when you don't have a problem to fly it. And I'm even more impressed with a fact that you have saw invisible pilots flying planes from externals, you wouldn't enforce that setting on Greatergreen if it wasn't realistic, would you?

Flying any setting is ok, game is here to spark the illusion but in the end illusion is created in your brain. Flying with icons can be as realistic as playing without them.

Whatever setting you use in game it's not realistic, only thing you can do is to change what is screwed up more.

In fact, when you take into account the fact that there is million differences between sitting in real cockpit and in sitting in front of PC than it's easy to conclude and prove that if you want realistic result than you have to use unrealistic methods. ( Anybody with high school education should be able to prove it with scientific method. It's easy, just a elementary math and few IF and THEN )

As far as helping wheels on bicycle are concerned my experience is that no icon setting is helping wheel for those who after years of flying realized that they lack a talent for flying so they need to game the game and use errors in graphics engine to get a kill from time to time.

Next step is to turn off their monitor and play that way.

I fly without icons too sometimes, usually when I'm to tired to fly seriously and when i want couple of easy kills before going to bed, so don't flame me

I'll see if I can make change to default setting, in fact I'm sure i can do that and I'm thinking about user customizable default setting where you will put your favorite setting in conf.ini and it will be loaded every time you start the game.

I don't know, probably it's possible. Distance when LOD is rendered depends a lot on your hardware and graphics setting. I spent couple of years flying on Duron700 with 256Mb and old graphic card, when I switched to better PC what was unreckognizable speck on the screen before become fully rendered LOD on better PC.

Another factor is your Dot setting, if you use long dot distance, LOD will be rendered at bigger distance too. Keep in mind that Dot setting divided with 2 gives approximate distance when dot will be rendered.

So DOT 25 means that dot will show up at ~12-13 km, I love it when people set it to some low value on server, like 2 or 3, you have better chances to ram opponent than to see him under that setting.

now i can change the color of icons too!

the real reason i always wanted to change the color of my icons is because of ground pounding,

i use voice command software and when i say "enemy ground" automatically what ever target closest to my crosshair gets tagged with an arrow, now i changed the color of thAT arrow to yellow and its very easy to see while red or blue arrows was not

I would like to see that too  , I suppose that this have something to do with padlock, could be that it affect those arrows in No Cockpit view also.

Although my intention was to make setting that is between No Icons and existing icons it's nice to see that users can find alternative way of using new icons.

im sory, ive never posted pics before so i dont know how.

but yes, i padlock an enemy ground unit and it gets taged with a yellow arow because i changed the
enemy icons color to yellow.

the arrow is a stock game icon.

try it your self. put this in the RCU file:

@a ei mp_dotrange FOE DOT 25 COLOR 0.1 RANGE 0.1 TYPE 0.3 ID 0.1 NAME 0.1 ALTICON 6.5 ALTSYMBOL ] ALTCOLOR 13
@a fi mp_dotrange FRIENDLY DOT 25 COLOR 0.1 RANGE 0.1 TYPE 0.3 ID 0.1 NAME 0.1 ALTICON 6.5 ALTSYMBOL O ALTCOLOR 13

make sure you set keys to padlock and unpadlock enemy ground units .
when you enter the plane bring down the console (shift + tab) and type EI

been doing ground attack missions with the DO-335... its cool..... oh it works great with track ir 6dof in german planes because when padlocked you still have X axis active

For me using icons is less unrealistic than not being able to tell what an aircraft is until you're 1km from it, but on the other hand I find the default icons fairly good and configurable enough (easily, with help of IL2 Stab)

The only change I would like to make is reduce the dimension of the font.
Is that possible?
Can this mod be configured to use a smaller version of the default icons?

Cool, I guess I need to set mp dotrange then and see.

I have an e6600 8800gts machine, I can probably set it farther

People that are using icons should not feel attacked when one that don't use them makes "a little fun" of them, after all, we all used them at some point Wink .

Most of the time those who use "realist" settings are making "a little fun" just to make the other feel a bit "offended" in an attept to scratch his ego enough to make him join the other band Big Grin .

The facts are:

1. Any plane can be identified at great distance by several things: position, direction of flight, shape (note that shape is last). If you are in a large furball... well... what are you doing there? Big Grin

2. Any plane you are about to shoot at if you are not shure of his identity YOU ARE OUT OF GUNS RANGE!

3. Spoting a plane is pilots job.

A highly recommended book is "IN PURSUIT" : A Pilot’s Guide to Online Air Combat by Johan Kylander that you can find on this page (1.3 MB pdf) : http://web.comhem.se/~u85627360/

Quote:In Pursuit is a thorough anthology of all facets of the life of a fighter pilot. In Pursuit covers, in detail, all of the positives and negatives, the things to do and the things not to do in order to become a “Top Gun” as a fighter pilot.

I flew fifty-seven missions over Europe during WWII and I feel like I remember a little of what I was taught. I’ve learned a lot of things from reading Johan Kylander’s book “In Pursuit” that I wish I had known way back then. I would have been a much more successful fighter pilot.
Russell S. Kyler, Captain USAAF (1945), 56th Fighter Group

I have been looking for something like this since I started simming.

Sorry for the bit OT Smile .

My home is about 1500 feet above the city below us. There is a mesa on the other side that comes up several hundred feet from there, and my distant horizon is just about at eye level (VERY far away, I can see mountains 85-100 miles away looking left from where I sit.

I routinely see aircraft by the airport. It is 11.5 miles in a straight line (ain't google earth great?) from my house to the nearest runway. Planes I see on final---below my horizon---are considerably farther, at least 15 miles. I can ID planes at that range if they are big. Easily. During forest fire season, I can ID ww2 era bombers---EASILY---at those ranges (PB4Ys, A-26s, and for post ww2, P-2s and P-3s). Just a couple months ago I watched a B-17 giving rides at Double Eagle airport which is 17.5 miles away. At that range it was not super clear as a B-17, but it came closer, inside about 10 miles, and it was easy to ID.

These are not planes against sky, I'm talking against city clutter. Try that in IL-2. PLace a plane 10 milese away, and spot it against complex ground terrain and get back to me about icons.

That said, I don't like icons (and don't play with them), I'd rather have a better dot system, and have my lowest LOD draw farther out. I wish there was a "negative" icone system that would draw an icon dot at far range, and turn them off entirely inside the range where they look like planes.

I think Spud has made some good points. My squadron tried flying with icons off and we found that the enemy was on us before we could distinguish friend from foe. Our computer monitors do not have the color reproduction, contrast, or resolving power of the human eye. Our monitors also shrink the virtual world so we can see a sufficiently large area that will keep us from becoming hopelessly disoriented. Icons of some type should at least allow us to distinguish friend from foe at the ranges in which a real pilot in a real aircraft could have done.

i don't get it ..... this mod is for changing game icons , right? If you don't use them ...WTF you are doing here ? This is not mod discussion section and even there arguing pro and contra using icons would be OFF TOPIC .

I believe FC deserves more than that ....
