New Icons
#31

I disagree that a topic like this in WIP section should be filled only with praises to a mod maker. I will repeat my self... is a discussion forum after all not just a simple download page. So if you cannot talk civilized and hold your temper you should not enter the discussion. After all we talk about icons right?

And also I am right about abserving that the MOD maker did something to the icons to be more... "realistic-wise", more subtle. I guess maybe a mod with no colored icons (there are actualy servers with "Icons On" that draw only friendly icon, close and black) at all but with a more visible smalest LOD would be a next step.

And about not seeing in IL-2 like in real life etc (ofcourse everybody sees the differences), is actualy more simpler that most of people using icons think...

And stop being agressive like you defend something... noone means harm here... only in the sky Big Grin .

spud what FC did here IS a better dot system. if it can be set by host server.

you can chose what distance you want the icon to appear in the distance or disappear as the object closes in

you can choose what color or what the icon would be. any character or symbol that can be typed, including a dot.

if it can be set by host server, i dont know what other dot system would be better

Thanks for coming and pointing this out but it seems that zaelu is reasonable guy who is more joking than flaming so we will discuss. Maybe we can get something positive out of all of this.

zaelu Wrote:People that are using icons should not feel attacked when one that don't use them makes "a little fun" of them, after all, we all used them at some point Wink .

Most of the time those who use "realist" settings are making "a little fun" just to make the other feel a bit "offended" in an attept to scratch his ego enough to make him join the other band Very Happy .

The facts are:

1. Any plane can be identified at great distance by several things: position, direction of flight, shape (note that shape is last). If you are in a large furball... well... what are you doing there? Very Happy

2. Any plane you are about to shoot at if you are not shure of his identity YOU ARE OUT OF GUNS RANGE!

3. Spoting a plane is pilots job.

This is all true but point is what you want to simulate. You can see and identify planes in game but when, how easy is to track them in comparison to RL?

In ideal situation visibility in game would be the same as in RL but that's not the case. In that situation you must chose what you are going to simulate. If you have very poor LOD's like in game than these LODs don't carry same amount of information as you would get in RL.

For example if you have RL object that is visible at 5km and at same distance you can recognize it's color than how would you simulate this object in simulation where object is visible at 5km but color can be rendered at distances less than 3km.

What would be better, rendering just a gray object that don't carry any info about color or rendering gray object with letter above it that carry info about the color.

IMO both versions are equally right or wrong, they just emphasize different things. First version is more about visual aspect and second is more about information and it's just a matter of personal preference which one to use.

If both, server and player, have icon mod than player will have icons set by server host and it's easy to make icons (with console commands) with same color for both sides and rendered at same distance.

Is true what you say FC about those two faces of this "coin". Playing with "icons off" is more realistic for me but, it has severe drawbacks because of game limitations as you and others pointed. However, people like me tend to "live with" those minuses because 'this side' simulate more of something else... the workload of the pilot. When you see a boggie you have to know what side is him... so you start calculating... where is he coming from? is he in aggresive stance? do we have flights over there? at that altitude? etc etc etc... Many times I had flew in close headons with friendlies almost pressing the trigger (or even presing it Big Grin ) because those calculations went not perfectly... and it's fun... it's a part of the game. Just yesterday in a reversal I had confused one friendly (a squad mate on comms) with the enemy that was following him because they broke in different directions just when I made my roll to dive on the oponent. It took me more than 10 seconds to correct my mistake... luckly it was an AI an my friend escaped but, the yelling on TS was priceless... If icons would have been on, such an error couln'd had occurred... a human and natural error.

So, it's true that this mod makes icons far less disturbing to the simulation but you still lose the... error Big Grin.

So I was thinking... because I am good as a wooden plank at moding IL-2 maybe you or someone else could find a solution to making a mod in which the "dot" is replaced with the last visible LOD till it dissapear in to the sky. I made the suggestion here: viewtopic.php?t=2715 .

And a funny observation of mine... actualy the LODs as crapy as they are, in fact are some sort of caricaturisations of the planes they represent. Many people complained about the fact 109 has too big underwing radiators at some inferior LODs, or the wings too squared... or the Yaks and Laggs have too pointy wings... but, that is what it's making them recognoscible. Once you get used with the main silhouette features of the planes you see them even in those simplified LODs... the game actualy helps you here by its imperfection Smile .

Anyway... enough with OT chit chat... if you could think to a solution for that Mod idea with the LOD instead of Dot we may continue this discussion in that thread I pointed.

And sorry if my interventions were a bit off track for this thread.

Hi.. I play an online camapign with a group of friends across a LAN at work. Could someone tell me if, to get this mod working so we can all see the changes it makes to the dot settings, we all have to install it or just myself (I'm running the server)?

Also, if I'm the only one to install the mod, and therefore run the mod activator to do so, will that prevent the others, with their unmodded versions of the game, from seeing and connecting to me?

Thanks

All players must have Icon mod but only the host have to choose icon setting, all other will have what host selected.

Whatever your feeling about the use of icons, labels whatever you call them, it's something you are entitled to.

I don't necessarily like the labels associated with aircraft off at a distance.

For some with visual problems, and for those of us who are starting to experience them, some sort of 'help' is necessary.

I don't use the icons / labels, just my preference. But then I have occasionally been jumped by units 'from' out of 'no-where'.

Anyway situations aside, I have a really 'stupid' question! Would it be possible to make the 'distant' objects 'blink' on or off. A visual clue for those that can't make out 'small' objects. Once you closed to withing a specific range, say when the program substituted 'shapes' for 'dots', the 'blinking' could stop!

FC.. I haven't been able to get them to work. It will take me 2-3 days to digest all of that read me & maybe I'll accidently stumble into getting it to work.

anyway, that was not what I was looking for anyway.

In the game controls section is a listing "Toggle Icon Types"

I have mine set to the "L" key. When I hit the key once I get a distance...say 5.0 in red or blue.
I hit it twice I get 5.0 ZZ + AH
I hit it the third time & I get the whole thing... 5.0 A-20:ZZ + AH

It's simple... Can another hit be programmed in that would just add a blue or red * that would represent the Axes or allies aircraft depending on which you are flying against at the time.

Don't even need an icon to represent your side...Just the enemy side.

This other way that you have done goes away after each change & That is a bit more trouble then it is worth I think.

FC great idea with the new icons, I hope it is still available, the link posted here is not working...it is great to distinguish friend or foe without the large triangles...so, if it's still available, please post another link..Thank You very much
