DGEN.....?
#1

Hi and thanx to all modders here for the great work in keeping il2 still alive....very appreciated.!!!
I have just a question: is there anybody out there who can handle properly the DGEN in order to add in new flyables and new maps?

Thx in advance and sorry for my horrible english

hi! I think youre not alone with your wishes, I hope sooner or later somebody will open the dgen data files. I'm not a good programmer otherwise I'd do it myself.

Well I'm no programmer but I've been messing around with a little program called Reverse Engineering Compiler (REC) http://www.backerstreet.com/rec/rec.htm You just download and install it to a folder, trigger the exe and point the GUI to DGen.exe using the File>New Project Menu. It takes about a minute to analyse DGen and then shows what it contains. Lots of code strings... and other things. I've only once used a hex editor so don't know much about the process but it may be that Dgen could be simply updated to include extra maps and aircraft by that means.

Trouble is, you need to drill down through the areas and regions of code (using the decompile command on the interface) to determine the function of each - or so it says on the tin (!)
I don't have the knowledge to do that, but this may inspire someone else to have a crack at it.

Thank you Username.

Unfortunately this task of modding DGen is not a job for a regular user, even with the appropriate decompiling software. We would need the help from a programmer who knows the game

Agreed. I really only wanted to show that DGen isn't encrypted and should be much easier to open up than the SFS files were. Somewhere it must contain master lists of aircraft, Euro/Pacific map names, place names per map and objects. Updating it might be as easy as making a few additions to the relevant libraries - if only they could be found.
