Korea Fullscale Map
#1

Hi all,

Thought I'd share what I'd been up to. I've been working on a Korean War campaign for DCG and wanted to see if it was possible to map the peninsula in a 1:1 scale:

yup. And it came out looking great:

Unfortunatly it doesn't run so well. If I were to use this map I might have to settle for 1/3 to 1/2 scale. But I think it's clear there's no actual limit on map size - this one is 1000km x 600km

Also, very large maps could probably be simulated if they were mostly flat and designers didn't put too many buildings on them, like Coral Sea...

Some tricks I learned:

Using the gaussian blur tool in photoshop is a great way to smooth out lakes and terrain instantly on your map_c and map_h files.

looking good .... Big Grin

and you can always make two or three versions.... just with different actors.static file ( different areas populated with objects ) if you're concerned about FPS and stuff ...

cheers,

Very nice project!!

I started to make a Korea mini campaign long ago using the Singapore map for which I compiled a special skinpack, 1950's camos for IL-2 planes, do you need it?...its yet unreleased.

Great stuff!

The Korean war is a very interesting subject for Il-2.

I'd love to see those skins Vpmedia. This is a great opportunity to get greative in your skinning.
Have you seen Obelix's North Korean Mig-13? It's great.
I gave skinning a Yak-15 a go myself once...

We really need the -4 and -5 series Corsairs for a Korean War map.

YES PLEASE! If Ranwers could stik a Droptak as an F4U-5N radar I bet he can stick'em on the end of the P-80's Wings... The tricky part is going to be making them functional, but with the rate of fuel consuption of Il2 is shouldn't be necesery right?

Why not include the southern tip of the peninsula? Fighting went all the way down to the outskirts of Busan.

I mean it took a long, long time to load, and with a blank actors.static file as well. I'm actually doing a trial run on a 1/4 scale map to see how that goes. And yes the map does go all the way to Pusan in the south.

If anyone has a hankering to mod the F-86, this is the place...

BTW, does anyone know how to get Photoshop to stop changing RGB values when I save a .tga file? I'm sick of drawing in forests and covering half the map with cities...

Yeah there was one time I wanted to make a Small Campaing on VMF323 I think it was, the Rattlers, Corsair pilots whom Flew off the Badong Strait CVE 116, and helped protect the Pusan Perimeter.

It was inspired by Retreat Hell but W.E.B. Griffen. GREAT AUTHOR, GREAT BOOK!

Making progress on the 1/2 size map, which I think will be an ideal compromise between size and processing capability, not to mention flight times (I don't think a P-80 could even get to the yalu and back on a fullscale map.

I was having problems with rivers, since Korea has such long rivers that come from the mountains. Putting them at sea level looked terrible and made deep gorges along the yalu that just didn't work, so I decided to keep them at their realistic height. From the air you can't tell, it's only look from the side that you notice the see-through effect, which shouldn't happen often. This did give me a problem with bridges though, until I figured this out:

I made the water texture a "beach" so that vehicles could travel over it, and laid down airstrip tiles so that vehicle could follow the road on something. It's not great, but it beats sinking the rivers down to sea level or having no bridges at all

Maybe one of the wonder-modders around here could make a more bridge-like airstrip tile?

Nice project...you seem to be running into some of the same problems as me with my thailand map..

will the vehicles run over airfield tiles placed upon water...or do you have to change the underlying texture too?

shouldn't be difficult to make a new set of tiles to look more bridge-like....but they would have to be included in the install pack

The texture underneath has to be something besides water, otherwise it blocks vehicles. This way though you can draw a road through the river for the vehicles to follow, so it's not such a big concern.
