Is there an explanation for the PRS file?

If there is not already an explanation for the various sound related settings within the PRS file then I would hope that someone with an understanding of this file format would publish a guide.

There are a lot of individual sound mods coming out post .93 which do not "play well" within the existing sound mod or owing to variation in user's sound cards would be better served if a user could go into that PRS file and tweak what setting he/she wants in order to get the best sound they could out of a given .wav file.

As an example I have recently downloaded sound mods which had:

1. Much higher or lower gain (volume) when compared with other sounds already part of the .93 mod
2. The sounds were recorded in stereo when other sounds were in mono
3. The sounds were recorded at some rate other than 44100

So if we were to have an explanation of the PRS file then individual users could go into that file knowing what values to change in order to better meet the desired sound within the boundaries of their existing system specifications.

The samples in the sound mods are from various sources, you can see the results. But if you got SoundForge its not too hard to fix them.

They should be 44100khz or 22100Khz but not lower, mono, without clipping
if you get a distorted engine sound you need to lower volume a bit in the wav.

In the preset files, the settings which work for me are:

occlusion -9
obstruction -7 (not -200 or 400)
[spl] 100 (for engines)
[spl] 120 (for guns)

I'm correcting every day something on the sounds, if I'm finished I'll publish it for testing.

I must admitt that I'm not very familiar with sound engineering, I learn by the 'trial end error' method Smile

Maybe we should ask one of the big sound modders like SG2 Wasy if they could give us a complete what dose what in the PRS........... Confusedhock:

Wasy, Istvan, and Eliot,

Thanks I think that an explanation is needed. Istvan I'm looking forward to your tweak. The problem with sound is that I think there is more potential for unintended variation in volume by the author of a mod than there is for graphics.

Simply because hearing is a much more subjective experience than seeing for people. So though a sound mod may take us close to what we want, we have to account for great differences in sound cards and perceived hearing.

So giving everyone an explanation as to what changing the values within the PRS file will do for sounds is a good way to allow folks to tweak the mod to the auditory characteristics of their own sound cards and hearing.
