It's a test on normal petrol, not much more volatile aviation fuel.. Get real.
Next, think about the pilots who became countless casualties from severe burns caused by an AvGas fire..
Next, read Saburo Sakai's book.. who clearly states that when he was presented with an aircraft landing that had run out of fuel, his tanks were literaly running on fumes, he would not even think about a wheels up landing on the beach because he feared his Zero would explode even with no fuel in the tanks. He chose to try to land it normaly on the runway even though he was severely wounded..

I'm personnaly a fan of the Mythbusters,i can supply you with much more tracks,where they try to make an explosion with different kind of fuel /gazoline,gaz,propane,methane and finnaly the unlightable Petrol/.

And to inform you Trooper,that was not petrol,that was gazoline /or Benzin,as we call it here in Europe/.Because you'll not be able to light a fire with petrol even when you're using a Flame Thrower,try it by your self and you'll see.

Guess our WWII pilots are telling fibs then.. People who flew their aircraft and knew them inside out like Sakai don't really know what they are talking about obviously.. I can only bow to Myth Busters as they are the real aviation experts.. :roll:

Guys' what blew up in the Fuel tanks was NOT fuel in liquid form, but the fumes acumulated in them. See a full tank wont explode becouse there is no fumes inside. When a non sealble tank was shot , holes alowed aire (oxigen) in the tank , as the tank drew empty, it got filled with fumes, very explosive fumes, of fuel, and air.. that DID explode. The danger is as Sakagi states a most empty fuel tank full of fumes and air. In that situation the tank goes boom with the least spark.

So what lites up and goes boom if comprerssed is fuel fumes that acumulate in half empty tanks yes.... So in theory Dropt tanks should explode When almost empty and with previous holes in it that alowed the correct miscture of fuel fumes and oxigen.

And that' s why Zeros were Zippos, becouse the tanks would not seal, alowing air to fill the space left by the leaking fuel.

Absoulutly correct there Baco - its the ignition of the fumes which causes the 'tanks to go boom. For example this was believed to be the cause of the TWA 800 accident for example... Even when we're taught to refuel our G.A aircraft, we're stressed how volatile the bloody fumes are.

As for the shooting the gas tank for example - if the tanks are empty IRL and full of fumes, incendary rounds & cannon, would cause a pretty satisfactory result...

...BOOM...

As a side note, apparently its actually possible, to even put a match out in a tank of A1 jet fuel without fire happening...

Fuel tanks can explode without fuel...

That black smoke comes when somebody shoot ur oilpipes broken, so oil starts to smoke when it streams to hot engine...


This completely ignores the fact that you can have had the engined feathered for several minutes and the tempurate be below the ignition point of oil and have no spark (ie, engine feathered, no shots fired) and the black smoke will ignite....

Oh, and I can think of at least one "Myth" the Mythbusters "busters" and had to then retract in the face of RL evidence....hardly a credible source.

+1.They have a couple very good movies with planes btw.So yes,they are avionic experts too!

ps:I was not talking about the papered Zero's,that will turn it self in a big ball of fire even if it hit a bird!I was talking about the serious stuff,the self sealing tanks,which the serious airforces used in WW2,the zero is a great plane,but with not self sealing tanks....They just show us how "expensive" the guy's life is,in the Zero...Sending him to be burned alive.
