Ugly = Character

Love Italian planes for the same reason! 8)

Some french warbirds had a strange look, I must admit...
But plenty of warbirds of the same time had also a strange look....
Look at a Boeing p-26... Not the finest bird, not the most sexy too......

Nobody can say the Potez 630 isn't pretty. 8)

That's right, why should she be uglier than Bf 110? The look is similar.

And by the way, D.520 and Arsenal VG.33 seem pretty elegant to me, comparable with Macchi fighters!

The Bloch MB.174 bomber also is very aesthetical:

(Especially, I like this brown-brown camo scheme of the above one!)

The french had also several interestingly looking designs, which however never entered production. But having such in Il2 would be really pretty eyecandy! For example Arsenal Delanne 10:

Also, one should not forget that the French were the first to bomb Berlin. This was performed by the following plane in an long distance night raid:

This Farman NC.223.4 "Jules Verne" would be a nice feature in an 1940 mod, even if it was not mass produced.

Another types that would be fun to fly are

- Amiot 351 / 354 fast bomber
- Bloch MB.210 bomber
- Martin 167 Maryland

and finally...

Amiot 143, because of its interesting glass cabine. Wouldn't it be fun flying over the Ardennes or Flandres with this?

As a first step, one could think of a conversion from Douglas A-20 Boston to Douglas DB-7 early (french) version with french gauges etc.

im all for a french plane but can i ask how long was the French Air Force in the war for?

The French were there long enough to warrant some attention, not forgetting subsequent Vichy activity.

However if you want to get the modellers interested I think it is better to focus on a single aircraft and to identify which existing aircraft or parts of aircraft can be used to create it.

Have I mentioned the similarity of the Dewoitine D520 to the LaGG 3?
Some comparative profiles might be interesting.

Hi,

Now...that is a cruel question Mr Leigh

We have to remember that in those days, countries weren't so organised against against fast warfare. The only ones organaised were the germans, thats why they did so well.....the only thing that stpped them was that stretch off water, god bless, that made them stop when they got there feet wet, thus giving us time to sort our S**t out reoprganise, adapt & modernise equipment & ideas.

We must never forget those brave pilots from poland, france, belgium & other countries that came over to fight

The french are full of ideas, in everything, always at the forefront of technology, even nowadays. Yes some of them produce the weidest of aircraft......I love them  I've seen some post war french jets.......holy crap.....orrible.....but they flew  On the other hand , every nation had horrible & weird planes & lets not forget totally useless in some cases:wink:

Take no offence please, aircraft history & design in all countries has produced ugly ducklings every were, some stayed in service, some didn't:wink:

Maybe we should open an 'UGLY DUCKLING' section... could be a laugh

And to french planes, YES, build em all, they are great & will add 20 years to this game..lol

With other countries, like Poland, Holland, Belgium etc. ... long enough that you can be prepare

And, like a SHVAK said, ''we must never forget those brave pilots from other countries'' without them it's possible that the Germans could win the Battle of Britain and that's a fact.

303 Polish Squadron im. Tadeusza Kościuszki - 128 confirmed kills. Best score in Battle of Britain.

Beat that !

PS. I must say i I did not expect that kind of comments on this forum !

I agree...if some modellers could work on " Dewoitine D.520 " ... it would be so great... D520 is the best french fighter in 1940...

French Air Force in 1940 was important : almost 3000 aircraft (all categories)...french airplanes have been forgotten in Il2... Cry

@ =BLW=PabloSniper : many prototypes was born in France --> Potez 230, Arsenal VG 33/34/35/36/39 and etc...but never build in industrial series. We must be realistic...impossible to include all french aircraft of 1940...we must concentrate efforts on planes who saw combat against Germans : D.520, Bloch 152/155, Potez 631, Br

Hi,

Just take a close look at the Loir Neuport 401/411.....what a wonderfull plane

It's great, its a french version of a stuka, dive bomber of the era, look at the modern all round cockpit (later used in fighters),Retractable wheels with dive brakes on wheels...even the tail wheel, arrester hook for carrier ops......conclusion, great bit off kit!!

Anyone knows what happened tom the french carrier - Bearn?? did it get sunk???

yes France have a long experience in aeronautic (Pionnier before and during WWI by example)....LN 401/411 is interesting because you can see that it's not only the germans used dive bombing. But LN 401/411 was too slow (like Stuka isn't it ? :winkSmile...this motor engine is poor (690 Hp).

France don't used his unique and old Carrier like Royal Navy in 1940 ... because French thinked it was too slow (2 others french carriers must be build but fall of France stopped project). " BEARN " carrier served to transport airplanes between USA and France before fall of France. No operationnal mission during WW2 after this date i know.

French airplanes served in 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944 in different air forces : French Air Force, Luftwaffe (D.520 Training Fighter), Regia Aeronautica (D.520 Fighter -> Intercept Allied Bombers), Bulgarian Air Force, Finland (MS406/410)

French airplanes flew on Europe, Africa, Syria, Madagascar (Against FAA in 1942), Indochina (against Aviation of Thailand in 1941)
