Help ! French Airplanes need modelers 3D, espacially the Dewoitine D.520 !

A little work of " Claymore " :

(only to motivate somebody to work on 3D...)

And did a brilliant job against the 24s and P-38's! Wink

Well... prsonnally, if I had to vote for some French plane, I would take the Potez 63 (served in various countries : France, Romania, Switzerland for example) and LeO 45... we already have 2 fighters : Hawk 75A and MS 406...

Avoir la foi, c'est être plus sûr d'une chose que la raison ne le permet.

Yes Gaston I agree, but may be in a first time modeling a good cockpit for these aircrafts and a FM more credible !

I'd really love to see the D.520 and Amiot 143, the latter which took part in some famous bridge attacks at the Ardennes in 1940 (most were unsurprisingly shot down). The Amiot 340/351 would also be nice to see, a very modern looking medium bomber. But this project best deserves full 3d modelling once the source-code is cracked or whatever.

as i said how long were they in the war for??

not dont build them

Hello RAF_Leigh,

The French did take part in the whole of WWII; there were three distinct periods:

1) 1939 - June 1940: French Air Force fought and lost against Germany and Italy.

2) July 1940 - End of 1942: French air force was split into 2 parts: the majority (85% to 90%) became what we now call Vichy French Air force. They fought in the air against the allies in Africa and in the Middle East (enemies were the RAF, the Royal Navy, the US Navy, at locations such as Algeria, Senegal, Madagascar, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco). They also fought against Japan and Thailand in Indochina. Their planes were basically the same types that served in 1939 - 1940. So it means that the French aircraft of 1940 actually participated in air battles during more than 3 years, from September 1939 to the end of 1942. Although it is not so publicized, air battles featuring French pilots against British and American pilots were actually fierce and intense particularly during the Syria/Lebanon campaign in 1941, and during operation Torch, although the latter was short. The Dewoitine D-520 was used not only during the Battle of France against Germany and Italy, but also in Syria/Lebanon, for instance.

The minority rejoined the RAF and also later the VVS to form the Free French Air Force. They fought across the Channel, in Lybia, in Russia, at least.

3) From 1943 to 1945, the French air force was reborn and united again, fighting against Germany and Italy, after being requipped by the US and Britain.

I have attempted to make these forgotten events known through my campaigns French Wings, available at M4T. The missions in my campaigns are not historical, but the story is correct and campaign briefings are documented.

As far as French planes in the game are concerned, I would vote for:

1) Dewoitine D-520

2) Potez 631/633

3) Bloch 174/175

4) Bloch 152/155

5) LeO 451

D.520 was also used by Germans and Italians (mostly in training units) as well as in Bulgaria (in operational units until after the end of the war)...

French WW2 planes are very interesting, specially the Dewoitine D. 520 wich was the "French Spitfire". I belive having some of theese amazing aircraft on IL-2 is really worth the modding, is there anyone interested on modding some of theese?

I truly hope some more French aircraft will come to us.

I vote for the D520 as well.

Also I believe that for a modder/modeler that the IAR80 is the closest thing to D520 in performance and flight model. (2nd being LaGG-3)

I've seen some work on other aircraft where people are moving parts (meshes) of certain planes to make other different aircraft with surprisingly fine results.

Though of course I have no knowledge on how to do things myself (I'm learning slowly), A viable D.520 project I think might stem from the engine section from a LaGG3 mounted on IAR80, and then reshape to fit D520 profile.

There are already 4 machine guns of the proper caliber in the proper location, and I supose one could transplant the centerline cannon from an MS406 to get the 20mm Hispano.

Anyway, I don't think that a very close to historically accurate D.520 is too far off...

P.S. If anybody has any insight as to how I could begin doing the above, just PM me. I know were not supposed to talk about it outloud, but I would like to offer my help to any body that's interested in this project. I have the tools (from this site) and 3dsmax 5, I just haven't been exposed to the MOD scene long enough to really be able to use them efficiently. With some simple instruction, I anticipate being able to learn to model simple things that will allow a project to be completed and enjoyed sooner.
