Fairey Barracuda
#1

i want barracuda! its an aircraft i have always liked and its often overlooked, few people know that barracudas crippled the tirpitz and with the powerful dive brakes it made a superb dive bomber, low speed handling and viz for landing was also good. it did have a few problems though, it was heavy, underpowered and a bugger to maintain, it also had a habbit of going into inverted flat spins when dive bombing if you use to much airbrake at high speed. dispite its flaws it was a potent weapon and we need more british carrier based planes for il2, i hope AAA can pull it off

Well, I think the Tempest would have the most appropriate cockpit. Plus the same chance of dying of Carbon Monoxide.

I'm pretty sure that in action the Cuda was only ever used as a divebomber, especially against the Tirpitz. Although often pictured with a Torpedo, I believe it never had the power to carry one in action.

Good luck to anyone who can model the wing-folding, though.......

ah the wing folding, I say, if it's a handful, I'd rather have non folding wings, although we do have planes that fold their wings in a similar way...

Realism: yes
No plane because realism can't be 100% met with wingfold, no... rather lack a feature that's hardly used anyway  oh and you'll hardly ever use the gear ever apart from takeoff, as she's so slow you're likely to be gutted if you encounter as much as a fisherman with a pistol...

I think the B6N2 has potential as a Barracuda. Raise the wings and tailplane, change the nose for a Tempest's or P40's - and you're well on the way.
Actually, the top curve of the Barracuda's nose is quite pronounced, so maybe a Hurricane nose with a Tempest beard radiator would be better.

Wow!

Amazing

We need a modder's opinion... hmm...

Edit: haha simultaneous postage... good idea, but I mean look at the nose! it's really a tempest nose, profile and top are all tempest, it just needs tweaking from the front view...

Good ideas keep 'em coming!

Tail and body, spot on man, kudos!

We need to use the tempest nose, and possibly 109 wings as the ones on the plane in the pic are a bit swept

This is the top down view, please do realize that this is NOT TO SCALE

I simply made the composite to illustrate the similarity, thanks! Wink

you gotta hand it to the brits.

their planes are either the ugliest in the sky or the most beautiful. Smile

I believe the Barracuda falls under the former category, but it would still be nice to have in game.

Yes, it's a pity somebody didn't put a hand on the shoulder of the Barracuda's designer and say: "You know, you could make a B6N2 out of that. Just lower the wings and tailplane and put a radial engine on it."

Re the wings, I think they can be straightened - a similar thing was done for the Me410 (the Me210 wings are swept back).

IIRC the reason for the Barracuda's odd appearance is more down to the RN specification, which was apparently horrendous, than the designer. It was a spec. that kept changing during development, which contributed to the plane's chief weaknesses - lack of power and range.

That said, I think it looks quite good with the wheels up, from certain angles.

Howlin_mad has loads of information, pictures and so on of the thing, so he'll most likely be a very good source, I'll just try and do what little I can Wink
