Sure can!

Get a copy of 3DS Max, and start building. In a few months you might have something relatively close to resembling the cockpit Smile

Program:

http://store.autodesk.com/DRHM/servlet/ ... =103837600

Unit Cost: $3,495.00 USD

Difficulty:

Immense.

The problem is its not a simple click and go venture. Simply creating (or even more simply, editing) a mesh requires some working knowledge of the software. Fortunatly there is a few books available, and two or three hundred tutorials at least available online, that can teach you these basics.

After that it gets easier mind you Wink

The good news is, whilst you're saving for the program, and learning from books, you can spend your time gathering resources for the build. For example, are you going to make one basic B-17 pit, or several different versions?

Say, you had some experience with 3DS Max, and model making, you should still be able to turn outa vague lookalike within a couple of months or so.

Thats if you wish to make a proper B-17 pit. You always have the option of making a, dear I say it, Franken-Pit, which is made from bits already ingame. This way you could get a rough facsimilie of a Fort's pit. This is done with a lot of co-ordinate editing.

And if you're really keen on the idea, which I must say I would applaud you for, have a look here:

FltLt_Hardball, has out done himself with the plethora of user guides, or rather outlines, of what is required with a 3D model. Obviously its slightly different these days, but still gives you a rough outline.

For example; basic tutorial for 3DS Max

This is the skill level I left 3d max due to stressful university life two years ago:

That is an INSANE amount of cash for software!!!
I have a copy of 3DSMax ver 3, the price for which I am not at liberty to tell...
3 years later, I still haven't got my head around the 'basics'......in between work, and IL-2, I just don't see me finding the time...
MY SALUTE to ALL MODDERS!!! 8) 8) Big Grin

A free alternative to 3DS Max may be Wings 3D, but I don't think it has all of 3DS Max's possibilities. You can download it from www.wings3d.com. SH3/SH4 modellers seem to be able to make some pretty amzaing stuff with it, so before spending $$$$$$ on 3DS Max take a look at this first.

Oleg required models made with 3DS, so I don't know of other CAD software will work well.

I made some models with AC3D (that has a function to export to 3DS format IIRC).
I worked at a Blenheim cockpit, it's now maybe 50% complete (pilot cockpit only), really a huge work...

Well Harley another alternative because 3Ds Max costs a hell of a lot is to see if you can find a cockpit modder who isn't too busy right now and could start work on a B17..... or someone who is very good with 3Ds Max and might be interested in doing something like this....

The B-17 pit is a worthy cause. I would really like to see her fitted out.

Sure you can get the latest version of 3DStudio Max, or even the acedemic version for $250usd (14months license.) The latest Alias Maya even has a free version with watermarked renders. But I've found you just cannot get the required 3DStudio Max version 5/6 anywhere.

However amass as much reference as is humanly possible. Get a good "3d modelling for dummies" book on your chosen program. And kiss your social life goodbye.
