The Griffon is kind of like the ultimate race version of a Merlin for sound, both are 27.02 litres displacement and produce max power at around 3000rpm.
The Daimler Benz were always bigger (33.9 litres 601, 35.7 litres 605) so even at cruise or at altitude they put out a good proportion of their maximum output, which makes them great overall performers. The Daimler doesn't have to rev as much to give similar power to the Rolls Royce and due to reciprocal mass their maximum engine speed is less.
The DB-603 however is a monster at 44.5 litres. The 603A for example has a max output of 1750PS but its cruise output is over 1500PS. And when something that big revs to 2800 with open exhaust you're gonna hear it. I'd say it sounds like a 605D but louder/deeper and probably a different supercharger whine, a stereo gear/belt noise for the two stage system.
