Though very nice work there was great debate as to this on the premier japanese aircraft forum...I myself siding with the opposite side which contested that Kawasaki Type 3 Fighter cockpits were the stock sim color and possibly others.....The color utilized in this mod I disagree with for many reasons....a big chunck of it translation and secondly the "sole" example of this color utilized I believe on a much later aircraft then in the sim (actually a Ki-100 I believe as well) and was heavily weathered.

Well actually in that (though many other wrong...grrrrrrrrrr....) instance SaSQoN(sp?)...However it's not quite so cut and dry.......First off, I'm under the VERY clear impression it changed over the years, in kind Aotake which was NOT to be used in cockpits seems in some cases to of been or something similar....If you read up on this odd varnish of sorts, it covered a vast range of colors simply due to poor quality control.....In any case I have B&W photo's of untouched Ki-61 cockpits, and there is ABSOLUTLY no way they are that color (it much to light).

Could it of been?...eh...I doubt it. You don't want to make cockpits bright yet dark. More so Japanese paint and varnish was notorious for very radical color shifts due to the environment even just air let alone UV and such.....The sole example photo of that I believe from a Ki-100, and it very heavily shifted due to the elements........However as I said it heavily debated.

Yet the Blue varnish "believed" to be an early color result.......I'd buy it before I would yellow.

An interesting debate on the dreaded "Aotake" etc. Here is an image of a KI61 restoration with the cockpit untouched. I think both Aotake and a tan type colour are evident ... you be the judge. Like Billfish I too have looked for a definitive answer to Ki61 interior colour and I am still undecided. Though I tend to favour a Tan colour. IMO the raw aluminium was coated with Aotake as a primer/inhibitor then the manufacturer (Kawasaki) have used their standard factory colour over the Aotake. The AAA Repaint is in my opinion a good start but way to bright.

The restorers of 2 KI61s have gone with a tan colour for the interior.

As to relying on B&W photos one needs to be unbelieveably careful here as Lighter colours can be displayed as Dark colours depending on the Emulsion used. There are a number of RAF 1940 images that show the broad yellow ring of the fuselage roundel as a very dark colour... this as a direct result of the Film emulsion used.



Above is an example. You would be hard pressed without other knowledge to pick the outer roundel colour as yellow.

The Sea Hurricane in the lower Photo is late 1942 with the thin yellow ring as the outer colour of the roundel !

The green cockpit isn't a true repaint. I think the author just adjusted the rgb values to turn the clear blue into green.

I modified this one recently to darken the aotake-like glaze slightly, to better match some samples I've seen. A full blown reskin would be great to see one day. Not to mention a few different sub-variants.

Aotake, was NOT to be used as a cockpit finish.....It was a catch all finish used to simply coat interior components for a finish, to even much like we'd use bluing to scribe lines on.....It's color ranged form almost clear lacquer, to greens, blues, yellows, etc.. This very well described and outlined in "Japanese Aircraft Equipment, by Robert Mikesh", along with it the whys as to color shifts, and to even how much more varied it could shift due to UV, water, air, etc., hence the environment.

Now I've heard it stated often as a "grass yellow/green"......Well here it is after a number of years protected...Yet simply 1 varient of it.


Now look at this and consider the colors of the various knobs and such....This the same cockpit shown above looking down onto the seat:
