UPDATED THREAD

Hey guys,

Ok, I've decided on my next project, and made a start. It is:

I've decided to expand on my original idea of Egypt. Firstly I expanded to include NE Libya, then I thought I'd include Crete, and then I thought - what the hell - and included most of Greece too. The area I'll be covering is this:

Now, as you can appreciate, it's a massive area so it won't be 1:1 scale. I think it's come down to about 1:3 scale which is fine for such a large map. It should be useful for lots of campaigns/missions, especially El Alamein and the invasion of Crete.

I'm actually really lookng forward to working on this. I've learnt so much from my Channel map that I'll be able to approach this map much more professionally and effectively and save myself lots of time. I'm off to the archives to research airfields so I can make them as accurate as possible but I'm aware that records may be sparse for some of the tiny temporary airfields. But, if you have info on any airfields, towns, targets etc in the area I'd love to see them!

About my Channel map - it's not abandoned. The final version will still be released, just not yet Wink

Any comments, ideas etc are more than welcome.

Cheers,

Joe

Well you could add the canal, so we can use the Sinai map, and have a common area.
Yet the Sinai map will not be comparable to the level of deph that you have us used to, hehe.

Note: I am not putting down that very nice map, it is just that Cannon here is in an entirelly different leage touguether with the Pacific Proyect guys...

Don't worry, I must admit my Sinai map is quite unfinished... and will stay... because, with my new job, I don't have time anymore.

I'm afraid that will be the same for the Philippines map I started some weeks ago. It is fully flyable in game but I have no time to customize it, so at this point, no airfields, no roads, no cities...
That's the reason why I had the idea to release it "as it is" to give some guys the opportunity to finish it.... but it would be really a heavy download, about 150M... so I'll see...

Well, I would certainly look into creating a custom set of textures for at least some of the map Smile

And I for one, am very happy and gratefull you decided to release Sinai, I plan to use it extensivelly. My laptop -where I did mi mapbuilding wokr on my way to work in the train-, just died, but when repaired, and I am able to finnisth my test proyect, I might take a look at Sinai, and if Cannon has the new textures, maybe I can use them there and do a little more research and customization... but like you my job is quite demanding leaving little time for other things...

cheers.

Hi Canon!
This whould be a nice map.

The distance between the golf of solum and alexandria is 500 km. This whould be a very big map. But we also have a lot of water and a lot of sand. Desert maps always had a very good performance on online maps.

An update.

Firstly, before I got too into the map I decided to increase the scale a little. The map is now 2/3 scale and takes a very long time to fly across! I mainly increased the scale because I wanted the airfields etc to be in scale with the landmasses (i.e. I want to fit more than one airfield on Crete! Smile )

Here are a few progress shots. The first draft of map_c, map_h and map_t are done and this is how it looks. The map will feature some new textures to attempt to portray the variety of vegetation in the area. Having looked at google earth I can see I need to re-forest certain areas. I'm pretty pleased with how the first draft is looking.

Comments very welcome

Joe

I'm sure it will be a great job! I'm slightly dissapointed with the exclusion of Cyprus... Smile
