zip_Alpen_beta + update available!
#1

Download it at

http://files.filefront.com/zip+Alpen+be ... einfo.html

The map covers 825x365 km and includes a very western part of France, whole Switzerland, southern Germany, nearly whole Austria, northern Italy, eastern Slovenia and a little part of nothern Croatia.

A special hight map to use with gimp for level- and divebombing is also included.

Work took nearly four month till now.

Update and link to rapidshare as stated below.

-------------------------

For Version 4.09b1m only.

-------------------------

Installation:

Unzip zip_Alpen_beta.zip to a folder ...\mods\mapmods\maps\zip_alpen (Not ".....\zip_alpen_beta"; the included readme.txt unfortunately does not mention this). Add the following line somewhere in the all.ini file at your ...\mods\mapmods\maps-folder:

zip_Alpen zip_Alpen/zip_Alpen_load.ini

That's all. No custom objects are used.

---------------------------

This is a beta because

Roads & rails are nor cleared from buildings, rivers are cleared only with a quite dirty method.

Glaciers are not included. There is no information available where these alleged glaciers shall be. If there ever was a conspiracy ... I better shut up here.

Railway stations and Venice will be created soon.

FMB crashes when zooming into the biggest towns Muenchen and Wien and sometimes Milano. I violate a spezial limitation of the FMB here. I think it's just a number somewhere in the games code written somewhen last century. "640 KB are enough". Someone should take a look at it. Gaming isn't affected, but framerates are also a little bit low there. Will be changed.

---------------------------

Some notes:

Set Water=1 in the conf.ini before using a seaplane or flying very low over lakes or rivers in the hight. Otherwise seaplanes seem to hover over the water when joining (Nevertheless you can take of) and flying very low causes your plane to crash. You will also notice black stripes at the lakefronts and the stern wash of seaplanes far below. With water=2 or higher there seems to be a spezial water surface layer that is allways at height "0". Someone should change that.

Additional trees at the airports and in citys don't appear at some systems with forest=3 in the conf.ini. Changing to forest=2 helps.

Loading time will be shorter then you may expect. It depends on what you expect, of course. Online loading time doesn't differ.

Some airports are for skilled pilots only. The AI-comrades arn't.

Little airport at Neidingen is private property. Ask owner for permission before using it.

AI cars and trains cross the rivers but will not allways use the custom made bridges. Standard bridges work only at hight "0", i could not use them. At the other side you can place objets on the bridges. AI ships can't harbor.

Low framerates will always be higher with a better graphic board. A quite good is recommended.

There are some known minor flaws like wrong connected roads/bridges or some flooded roads near some rivers. Number of unknown flaws ist 1042. Most airports arn't AI tested.

--------------------------

Usage of the hight map:

Open zip_Alpen_map.cfx with Gimp. Measure color value at selected point with the color picker. Read height from Height_table.pdf.

--------------------------

Please report flaws or problems. Any comments are welcome.

Have fun.

Update:

I forgot to eliminate the trees on the roads and rails around the fields. This update fixes that:

Just unzip to your ...\mods\mapmods\zip_alpen folder

Got it going here. Not sure what some of the extra files and folder are for. Be prepared for plenty of requests for tech help

Very nice for a beta. Some screenies:

The last one might need some attention. Located north of the maps centre. Got my grid lines deactivated, so I cant tell you the exact co-ords.

So much work. Amazing!!
Can't be fair commenting about FPS due to high end system. No issues there Smile
I am making some furball missions to test it out.
So far the only issue is a Crash after playing within FMB. The crash happens after quiting and clicking on the "done" button. An error appears about some memory could not be read and FB crashes after hitting the "ok" on that message.
When the missions is run normally through the Multiplayer section, no crashes!!
I will keep you posted. In the meantime, hold all my calls. Going back in!!
Many many thanks

To bad. I hope the missions are saved so you can fley? A friend of mine had the same problem (I think the missions were saved), it didn't occur after (for other reasons) reinstalling the game and the mods . He thinks that there was something wrong with some modfile or a only partly deleted mod or something like that.

Well, Nasa says the mountains there look this way and whom else should we trust? But it's true, they look a little bit strange, will change it, if i find them.

Zipzapp, that is correct. I made the mission, saved it and only crashed after I tried to hit the "Done" button after quitting playing the mission in FMB. So technically we will not have a problem testing the map. I just finished a little tour, running the map through my server with one client. No issues. I will keep looking for those mountains and report the coordinates.

Unfortunately high mountains will never look correct in il2 because of the way they are drawn....

the height progression is not linear...but the changes become more severe as height increases...besides the height limit of 4000 metres ....and then even at full size 1:1 one pixel has to represent 200 metres upon the ground Cry
