New Map IDEA Far North Aus to Pt Moresby and Kakoda Track
#1

Hi all,

Just thinking about the Darwin map. Now that it is out looks really, really good.
Just thinking about another possible Australian/ PNG area.

Dividing Range Townsville to Cairns, (Atherton Tablelands Mareeba)
All the island groups like Palm Island Group and Hinchenbrook Island, Whitsunday's etc
across over to Port Moresby finishing at the Kakoda Track.

JUST THOUGHTS, I'm no map maker but this would be a nice addition to the Darwin map

Cheers Kirby

Any re-do of the PNG map would be good. I was very disapointed after seeing footage of Port Morsby during an air raid. The footage showed lots of hills and our current Il2 PNG map shows Port Morsby to be flat Cry Cry

A redone to AAA standarts of the existing New Guinea map would be great, the existing one is such a shame!.

That was our plan, yes. We had plans to make a map the same size as the current Slot maps and have a great big chunk of New Guinea on it, as well as parts or the entirety of New Britain.

I just checked this and a map from Noz to Port Moresby would be absolutely HUGE, and would most likely be quite the undertaking, and quite frankly, I'm not up to making a map that size. The Slot was a huge amount of work(granted we delivered 6 maps) and working on something that big just makes your head spin and go numb after a while.

Skunkmeister is it a possibility to make a map with townsville in the middle with the whitsunday islands to the south and hitchinbrook island to the north. this was a busy area in ww2 and would be hugely appreciated if this is something that would be of interest to you.

Hello All,
I'm Canadian originally but moved to Oz when I was very young lived in Townsville and Cairns, and the Tablelands. I worked in The Whitsubday's and the Palm Island Group before moving to Thailand.
Being a WW 2 history enthusiast There was a huge amount of activity in Townsville, Palm Island Group, The Whitsunday's, Cairns and Mareeba on the Tablelands.
When I worked in the Whitsunday's I saw an old WW 2 photo of Day Dream Island with a Catalina in the picture. Apparently a B-24 Liberator crashed on the top of Hinchinbrook Island and it is still there.
While working on Orpheus Island I discovered that there was a Catalina base on a near by island but it was not Palm Island. You can not forget to mention Magnetic Island I have seen the huge gun emplacements. Mareeba I think was used for B-24's.
I think this map idea could be scaled down some yes it could be a huge project but a rethinking could be done on the size and scope maybe just including Port Moresby.

give us the eastings and northings of the area to be covered and I'll download the SRTM data and try it out

here is this one i have been struggling with, if you were to include the whitsunday island group they are just to the south a little.

I reckon top left 145 Deg East 16 Deg 44 Min South - bottom right 149 Deg 30 Min East, 20 Deg 31 Min South would cover it nicely, also gets in Charters Towers which was very active with americans in WWII - some nice pictures of WWII strips in the area here

I am really glad that you are retired Fabian Fred as I am sure if you were not like me your incredible maps would take a lot longer to come in to reality.
YOUR WORK IS SHEER GENIUS
What you have so far created I was thinking about.
Stat data I'll look around some Oz sites on the week end.
Also try your google earth too it should show some landscape semi arid desert forest. Google Arhnem Land and Iron Range to get a feel for those areas.
You've done this in a day or two!!!!!
I've been at work teaching English.

AWESOME! SHEER GENIUS FABIAN FRED

I just used my Thailand load.ini .... so that need adjusting

I don't know what PNG was like in the wartime ....maybe best to have just jungle covering the whole islands...and add textures for around the towns and cities later

the aussie bit can probably use textures from the Darwin map....

ANYWAY ...i just started it off....and have other maps to finish.... so if anyone wants to carry on from her they are welcome and I'll give them the map files

I smoothed off the pointy hill tops by giving the map_h a dose of gaussian blur at 0.3 % ... and have smoothed the water/land edges by blurring the map_c too... so it looks less squared than in the screenshot above now.
