Dear Fred,

Would you please give it to me after you have smoothed it out some.
You've done some incredible ground work but I could easily spend the next six months learning map retexturing to make this into a highly detailed map.
I've lived in Townsville, The Whitsunday's and Cairns so I know the Far North very well.
There will be lots of new textures to source like suger cane fields, corn, tea plantations, dairy cattle stations, beef cattle stations, semi arid forest, rainforest, and descent jungle. The earth from Townsville to Cairns is reddish volcanic soil so that even an interesting texture.
In Townsville Castle Hill is a brilliantly red orcher coloured rock out crop. In Cairns behind the city leading up to the rolling tropical hills is a very famous house called house on the hill. It was used as HQ for the commando group Z Force. They used a boat called The Krait for their secret missions.
Please put the smoothed out version in your upload html or send it to me over the e mail.
ps downloaded your other WIP tonight.

This book :

Has images and airfield diagrams of just about every airfield in Queensland as they were in WWII.
Happy to scan stuff as required.

This all looks excellent...

Now IF Merauke (Western Papua) is included (I see it on the google map in a post above) then that'd be grand (still be grand without it too).

Several RAAF Sqns operated out of Merauke including 12 Sqn which operated, amongst other types, the Vultee Vengence (Later changing up to B24 Liberators). Mr Trevor Sampson, a very good friend of my late father, was stationed at Merauke with 12 Sqn during the war. He is now approximately 87 & has passed on much interesting information relative to 12 Sqn activities at Merauke to me in casual conversation.

As it so happens I enjoy mission building & do so for the WTE group that I fly with. Having nostalgic links with Mr Sampson encourages the opportunity to create more Australian involved missions for our BATTLE FOR AUSTRALIA series from the likes of Niel Lowes 'Darwin' map & the possibility of Northern QLD as well as Papua New Guinea...

Anyway, hats off to all you map builders, great efforts!

Cheers Smile

Well,
It was finally great to catch up with you in Chiang Mai.
I really appreciated the Aus Far North/PNG map
I'll be organizing my laptoip for that work this week end.
I also apreciated the work you did with my file structures etc.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH FRED!!

When you come to Chiang Mai next time please do bring your other half and we will go out for a nice dinner. We have a Toyota Vios so picking you up in Chiang Mai is not a problem.

Once again Fred I enjoyed the visit greatly and really appreciated the map and IL 2 Lesson you gave me.

Hi Zulu,

I'd love some pics of TOWNSVILLE, ROSS RIVER, CHARTERS TOWERS, CAIRNS and MAREEBA.
I've found some pretty good sites and getting my father to send some books over from Oz to Thailand but some of your scanned photo would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Quelty,

Thanks for your efforts for posting those site links.
I already have that web site available.
I really like the picture of Mareeba airfield.
With the Iron Range strip I could probably use Fred's new emergancy strip on his Thai map to give that a very good muddy appearance. With his permission of course.

Cairns seems to be a problem area regarding photos

Just some more information

My father worked for the Australian Civil Aviation Authority.
He went up to Horn Island just passed Thursday Island and saw two crash sites of a B-17 and a P-47
both still there. He also saw the AA emplacements around the airfield.

Am now ready to start to retexture the Far North PNG map.

I live in Townsville. I actually started to make a Townsville map however I didnt have the time to finish it or the pateince really. The problem I think you will have with Townsville is that during the war it had at least 3 or 4 runways. At different locations throughout the city. The problem I had when making my map was getting Ross River and the Bohle river in proportion with the geographical landmarks, castle hill, Mt. Stuart.

By the way Castle Hill is more of a sandy colour, then a red ochera. If I have time I can help you out, however I have a lot of RL stuff to do.

Looking at that Roseneath Bunkers, bush and shit in the background is what Townsville looks like year round. If your looking to come to Australia avoid Townsville.

Hi ,
I am quite happy in doing this project as Fabian Fred has given me a basic flyable map to work with.
I have viewed Townsville from Magnetic Island and yes Castle Hill is there but Fred gave me the map with all his Thai textures so there are rice fields in Townsville he he, on it so the majority of my job is retexturing and airfields.
I'll have a look at the area tonight that you are talking about in Townsville.
Hinchenbrook's Height is perfect on this map.
So it's a great starting point.
I teach Thai high school seniors English so I am pretty patient and tolerant for many things.
Cheers

S` Kirby,
All sounds good m8, I now live in Ingham (born in Townsville and spent the last 17 years living there) so if you need anything from around this area, yell and I'll see what I can do - I'm guessing the current area doesn't look like what it was in WWII though, I will check out the local library as they had/have some old photos etc from that era.

Cheers

Hi Quelty,

My last job in Oz was on Orpheus Island use to go to Townsville a lot and had to go to Ingham if the sea plane wasn't going to Townsville for R and R.
That would be great for any help with the Townsville area.
My father has covered Cairns for me as he has a book written by a local Cairns lady about Cairns in the war years.
That web site info you posted last time is also very good.

Have a look at WIP new textures Aus PNG thread today.
