This really is a beautifully made map.

I have just tried the correction:-

The good news seems to be that Takali airfield is much better now, I used to get very low frames on both major Malta airfields but not on Takali any more. Smile

The bad news (for me anyhow) is I still seem to get a massive frame drop when Marsa airfield is anywhere in the field of view (so being drawn). Maybe it needs more of the same ?

The problem is different between the two:
Takali: aircraft taxi points (I have roughly halved them)
Marsa: transparent plates: I have dropped about 20% at the borders and the centre (where the buildings are), if I drop more of them it would be difficult to land.

What about dropping the whole Marsa airfield (i.e. leaving it without transparent plates) so that you cannot land on it anymore? Is it important for your gameplay?
Otherwise I could reduce it to a small strip (inreality it was not that, it was a former horse race circuit IIRC).

Strange that noone seems to find problems at Hal Far that is similar to Marsa...

Its interesting that you mention Hal Far, You may be onto something I think.
I was looking at Marsa primarily from the North and Hal far, although hard to spot would have been behind Marsa (and in the field of vision) when experiencing this drop.

Infact I may even have experienced the FR problem just before Marsa came into vision...and I just assumed that Marsa was the cause...however it could have been Hal_far (I thought about that after the above post).

If it isn't solvable, a smaller 'conventional' strip would definitely be a good option. The ItalyAfricaGreece map has a few simple airfields with a single strip and a circular road around the outside (the strip that they use for Marsa !) perhaps using similar would solve the problem ? it would look ok too .

Again thank you for your wonderful dedication , and this beautiful map. I am so glad that you are revisiting it and trying to get to the bottom of this.

I have only had time for a quick test using the QMB+ mission that I have where I always notice this. I'm flying along from the NE toward Malta getting about 75-80 fps but when I approach to within a certain distance where objects begin to render the frames drop to 28-31. Having never paid enough attention to what direction and area of Malta I'm looking at that makes this happen I can't say if it's different, only that my fps still get reduced by more than half when I approach to within a certain distance and get much worse with added action. This is on a Dual Core 6850, 8800GTX, 2gb RAM machine in 1600x1200 4x/4x AF/AA in Perfect with all settings (trees, effects, clouds, etc.) maxed in Config.ini for reference. This is on the plain Malta map.

I regards to your question: I'm in favour of dropping Marsa alltogether. There are still enough airfields on malta to use as bases and/or targets. Or simply dropping the airfield that does this.

Although there is an improvement for me it hasn't fixed the problem completely. The problem also occurs at Banff a/f on the Norway map. I mention the Banff a/f problem in case there is something other than the trabsparent plates causing the problem? A comparison of the two maps might highlight a further issue.

Thanks for the patch Maraz.
I was wondering if we couldn't be wrong about the airfield who's responsible of the FPS drop, maybe it's Luqa instead of Marsa.
Luqa may have too much taxi point as Takali?

After more testing....

I do think that it is Marsa airfield that is the culprit here (as you thought). The moment it is anywhere within my field of vision FR's bottom out.

Hal_Far is ok and I get high FR's around it.

OK thanks for further testing. Strangely I don't have FPS loss on these airfields. But my system is old and I never exceed 30 FPS anyway, BTW what graphic card have you guys? Mine is Nvidia 7600GT 512MB AGP.

So what I will do is:
- further reduce the number of transparent ground plates at Marsa (it will be possible to land south of the buildings only), maybe I will add a runway marking (white T) as well.

- reduce the number of aircraft taxi/spawn points at Luqa too (this cannot hurt)

Espect a new patch in a couple of days.
